  • "Non-standard exhaust" ticket in Quebec?

I was on my way through Quebec coming from NB and the QPP pulled me over saying that my exhaust was not legal here? The tickets 154 for a non standard exhaust as far as my crappy french reading skills can see.

Is it actually illegal to have a cat-back in Quebec now? I still have my cat on and its below the decible limit in Ontario. I'm from and plated in Ontario btw and never had a problem here.

He didn't do anything he just took some pictures and gave me the ticket.

The guy was just being a douche. They usually dont ticket out of province vehicles for mechanical stuff.

This will probably be useful for you.

    Law:
    Exhaust system.

    258. Every motor vehicle must be equipped with an exhaust system that conforms to the standards established by regulation.

    Regulations:
    §9. Exhaust system

    91. The exhaust system shall include the following components: manifolds, pipes, muffler, brackets and fasteners.

Those components shall be securely mounted to their anchorages and no leakage of exhaust gases shall be detected through joints, cracks or holes other than those originally provided by the manufacturer of the exhaust system to evacuate condensation.

Any repair on any of the components shall be such as to preserve the original characteristics.

    94. No component of the exhaust system shall be replaced, modified or removed so as to cause the system to be noisier than the one originally installed by the manufacturer on the road vehicle.
What type of exhaust do you have?

Exhaust tickets are stupid. Just tell them the exhaust is stock to Canada. If they still make you pay it... have a invoice ready with price of a new OEM exhaust system + shipping from Japan and ask them to pay for it lol

IE the exhaust which came on the car from Japan.

i cannot see how he can possibly ticket it you by saying its not legal "there"
thats like me driving down to california and having my car tickited, towed, whatever, because it doesnt meet their standards

if your from Ontario and you car is legal for ontario then this guy has no say in what modifications are done to your car
and actually i dont think it would matter even if your car wasnt legal in ontario, i doubt a guy in quebec can ticket you for that offense

"Any repair on any of the components shall be such as to preserve the original characteristics."

This is the "open to interpretation" nonsense... that can be read as "anything LOUDER/LARGER than stock is illegal" since it's not the ORIGINAL characteristics. What characteristics are they talking about exactly?

I hate vague BS like that. Leaves it totally up to officer discretion. Same with tint.

              Yeah tell me about it.

Although that specific section 91 doesn't speak AT ALL of stock/car manufacturer's exhaust.

But they say "manufacturer of the exhaust". So I could technically change the WHOLE system, and as long as I dont change SPECIFIC parts, i.e. just the resonator, or something in the likes, my exhaust "preserves the original characteristics" which the "manufacturer of the exhaust" made.

But in this case, I think the issue is more the Out of Province aspect of things. As previously said, who is he to say that your car is not "legal" in Quebec, when you dont even come from here. That's why I posted earlier the guy was being a douche, they usually dont bother people with that.

I tried searching but I can't seem to find anywhere in the law if it only applies to vehicules registered in the province (for car inspection/legality stuff). Unless there's some other policy I dont know of.

Using this same reasoning, you could also be stop for lets say side markers, and he'd force you to get an inspection!? That doesn't make any sense...he cant force an out of province vehicule to get an inspection.

Maybe he gave the OP a ticket under a municipality regulation for noise only? Which some places have. But it doesn't seem like it, since he wrote "154$ for non standard exhaust" which is straight out of the Highway Safety Code.
