  • Must have a "Right-Hand Drive Vehicle" badge or sticker

I know in the past, this has been a debate, but, not any longer. Its in the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. Avoid being pulled over for nothing. I was pulled over today for not having a "Right-Hand Drive Vehicle" sticker or badge on the rear end of my car. Luckily, he didn't issue me a ticket and he showed me where its written in the book. And kudos to the ones who have already taken this precautionary measure!

    Ontario Highway Traffic Act:

    (2) A driver of a right-hand drive vehicle shall not drive upon a
    highway unless
    (a) the vehicle is equipped with a mechanical or electrical device of
a type specified in the regulations, if any, or, if none is specified in
the regulations, a mechanical or electrical device with which the
vehicle was equipped by the manufacturer; or
    (b) there is prominently displayed on the rear of the vehicle in bold
face letters not less than 50 mm in height and of a colour contrasting
with that of the vehicle the words “RIGHT-HAND DRIVE VEHICLE”.

    R.S.P.E.I. 1974, Cap. H-6, s.165; 1978, c.10, s.8.

    Vehicles with right hand drive
    63. Every vehicle that is equipped with a right hand drive shall, unless it is equipped with a mechanical or electrical signal device as described in subsection 142 (6), have prominently displayed on the rear thereof, in bold face letters of not less than 50 millimetres in height and of a colour which is in contrast to that of the vehicle, the words,
    “RIGHT HAND DRIVE VEHICLE”.
    R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 63.

    Requirements for signalling device
    (6) A mechanical or electrical signal device shall clearly indicate the intention to turn, shall be visible and understandable during day-time and night-time from the front and from the rear of the vehicle for a distance of 30 metres, and shall be self-illuminated when used at any time from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 142 (6).

Right Drive puts a tag on just to avoid conflict... I've considered removing it once I get my car, but noticing how often this kind of thing happens I think I may leave it on.

Apparently it still is very much a debate.

Because I'm looking at the HTA right now and it states exactly what demon746 already posted.

And even the excerpt posted by Rena clearly says:

UNLESS the vehicle is equipped with a mechanical or electrical device of
a type specified in the regulations, if any, or, if none is specified in
the regulations, a mechanical or electrical device with which the
vehicle was equipped by the manufacturer

The electrical device being referred to is a turn signal.

Skylines have turn signals. Therefore they do not need to display anything saying Right Hand Drive.

So the final point on the matter is that, technically, by law, no you do not need to show a RHD sticker.

You may want to have one just to avoid being being hassled. But legally you are not required to do so.

rena!!! i got that exact section of the hta printed and in my glovebox. it clearly states you don't need one as long as you have proper working electronic turn signals.

to understand it, it helps to know why this law was implemented.....

back in the day if you didn't have turn signals you had to stick your hand out the car to signal your turns... (i.e riding a bike) hence if you had a RHD car the person behind you wouldn't know to look to the right hand side of the car for the signal unless if you had a RHD sticker on the back...

next time a cop pulls you over for this you can explain it to him....... nicely :P

This law is taken from the Prince Edward Island Highway Traffic Act (article 180(2)), and not the Ontario one.

                        Ontario: http://www.canlii.org/en/on/laws/sta...1990-c-h8.html

But on a practical stand point, they both say the same thing, as stated above.

FYI- The important thing to notice in this article is the "or" between paragraphs (a) and (b). It may be written different than the Ontario one, but it essentially means the same. If that "or" would of been an "and" instead, then in PEI the sticker would be mandatory.
