  • Quebec RHD prohibition passes.edit: the gazette sux

As of yesterday afternoon, the registration and importation of NEW RHD vehicles, with the exemption of those registered before April 29th 2009, are prohibited.

    Thank you, Quebec..

Provincial Transport Minister Julie Boulet banned right-hand-drive vehicles from Quebec roads yesterday.

Audrey Chaput, spokesperson for the Société d'assurance automobile du Québec, said the insurance board, which is also responsible for highway safety, called for the ban because she says there is an estimated 30-per-cent higher risk of accident with right-hand-drive vehicles.

Used JDM (Japanese domestic market) cars enter Canada under a loophole allowing vehicles 15 years old and older into the country without inspection.

They are attractive to young drivers because they are cheap, have no rust, low mileage and offer higher performance than comparable models on the Canadian market, Chaput said.

"Young drivers can buy a high-performance car for less," she said.

"I was not aware (of the ban)," said Wias Ilyasi, of JDM Nagoya Direct Import in Montreal, a company importing high-performance used cars from Japan.

"We have 10 cars in our warehouse. (Now) we can't sell them."

Ilyasi said he doesn't accept the claim that right-hand-drive cars are more accident-prone.

"It's bulls--t," he said. "It's just a pretext to help the small street-corner dealers."

A Honda Civic he imports can cost $5,000 to $6,000 and comes with a more powerful motor than a new, Canadian-made Civic.

Ilyasi estimated it would cost an extra $4,000 to get the same performance options on a new Civic purchased here.

Quebec announced plans to ban the right-hand-drive cars on April 29, giving interested parties 180 days to comment. The 180 days ended yesterday.

There are exceptions to the new rule for vehicles registered in Quebec before April 29 and for vehicles registered outside Quebec.

Vehicles built 25 years before they were imported into Canada are not affected.

Trucks, snowblowers and vehicles making frequent stops, such as rural mail-

delivery vehicles, and utility vehicles are also exempted.

The ministerial decree extends to K Trucks. The small Japanese delivery trucks will be allowed, but not on highways where the speed limit exceeds 70 kilometres per hour and will be registered with "C" licence plates.

        My thoughts exactly...

What are all of your opinions on pricing now; parts wise? I'm in the market for a ton of parts but since our RHD community is on the verge of extinction, would this mean prices in MTL (specifically) go on the fritz? or plummet?

We have strong competition with Toronto, and BC is very competitive with their pricing as long as you're willing to deal with shipping.. So i can only assume prices will drop?

        Opinions!

Sad day though; i'll be honest, i was excited for 2014 lol.

well looks like ill be keeping my GTR for a VERY long time now! ...lol

pricing, in my opinion, demand will still be high for aftermarket parts from our quebec community, and the places we get parts from are going to close up locally. (all of those JDM shops are basically out of business)

in short, i expect to see a small increase in the cost of parts for us montrealers, but thankfully the rest of canada is still a good market, so in reality, its not going to affect the parts market very much,

on the other hand.. anyone looking to buy a quebec registerred and plated GTR is probably going to have to pay out the nose to find a good clean skyline.

won't lie, the first thing i thought about when i read this in the gazette earlier was resale.. Holyyy mother of god, the price of these cars in QC is going to sky rocket..

Not only has the QC government managed to downsize motorcyclists to sport touring and cruiser bikes (1403$ for sport bike regi), they've also put another community to shambles.. I recently sold my CBR600rr for that very reason, next i'll be continously hassled by cops to see registration and insurance, then criticized for not speaking french, then furthermore, ticketed for my 4" gaping exhaust and what ever else they dub "ILLEGAL".. Ridiculous.

its against the law for someone to cancel ur insurance unless you have a accident or some crazy ticket or something... but they can increase the cost to make it unreasonable so u cant afford it.

I hate how the writer calls the 15 year law a "loophole" in which JDM cars can be imported.

                        What a bloody biased writer.

An this law is a f*****g joke. Disgusts me.

Kills an entire industry in QC.

Quietchaos, i know.. Loophole is totally the wrong term, more like, the Quebec gov't legally allowed this to happen until they realized they weren't profiting from it.. Lol

Insurance can't bail on you but like Josh said, they can definitely up the price.. I'm with Jevco now and paying 616 for public liability.. i can only assume that's going to be more next year..

1.5 years after I got a novice driver offence, and nearly half a year after I got my G license with no accidents, speeding tickets, or anything my insurance dropped me right after Quebec was first doing all this.
They also threatened my family saying they would drop them too if I didn't sign some sort of form saying I woulden't drive their vehicles.
Now my brother, and my sister both had gotten in two accidents by time they were my age, they also have a driving record with speeding tickets have never been dropped.

i've also know people to have caused two cars to be a write off and the company didn't drop them.

Hmmm but I'm driving a Skyline... with a 100 dollar ticket on my name.
Insurance companys can do what ever the hell they want they can drop you for sneezing on some guys bently if they wanted too.

And most people can't afford to go to a lawyer like me, so I just take it. Government says you need it, and government doesnt regulate it proporly, so the smallest offence screws you for the next 3 years of your life. And if you got a rare car, forget about it.

                              THE MONTREAL GAZETTE IS CLUELESS

I don't know how they could have misinterpreted that.

THE SAAQ DID NOT BAN RHD YET

They have just reissued the moratory for another 6 months.

probably because they could not find any relevant info to out right ban the cars...

                              I'll change the title
