  • This does not look good.

Guys in all honesty, I am fairly certain that more trouble is heading our way, and the cars we hold so dear are encountering more problems. I got a letter in the mail today concerning new law coming into affect which would allow police and MTO employee's to check that insurance is currently enacted on the vehicle before stickers can be issued etc.

Now I got a second letter informing me that my VIN# is incorrect, stating that there records do not list vin#'s like that and they are 17 digits and where they are located etc. But there was a 1800 number to call so i did, and I was informed by the woman on the other end, that all vehicles need 17 digit vins, and that mine could not be 10 digits, I got no where with her, and she basically told me that I have to go see a transport Canada official about it since the letter says vins must be 17 digits. I dont know what this means as of yet, but I did not like the tone about it because there are quite a few 10 Digit vins in ontario's system and I am afraid that something may happen.

    To be honest,

    this looks bad.

I'm pretty sure if they honestly want to be assholes this way, you can just get the can Re-vinned with a canadian 17-Digit Vin #, i believe its only about $100 not sure though. Dont think they would honestly care about a 10-digit vin or else everyone would be getting these letters.

17 digits took effect in 1981. So they are saying that cars manufactured prior to 1981 cannot be registered?

That means that the attached picture of a VIN of a Canadian build GM vehicle sold in Canada and registered in Canada can no longer be plated (and 10's of thousands like it).

I wouldn't get too excited about this just yet. It looks like they are rolling out a new process without the benefit of thought and will soon revise the policy when they see the real world application issues.

The Canadian government has a vendetta against the owners of nice cars. They seem to think that a nice car = dangerous driving.

Funnily enough, RHD owners DO get it the worst. Someone can insure and register a Stanley Steamer for the road, but not a friggin Nissan Fairlady Z.

It seems kind of retarded to me.

Thats how my insurance company over rides the system. I told them about the short vin and they said it doesn't matter we just throw zero's on the end.

Hahaha I cant believe they care this much about these cars, like holy ****. If they put as much effort in to stopping crime we would probably see a nice big percentage drop.

Thanks for that. Seriously though, if someone can register something as obscure as lets say, an old Ford Model T, and be able to drive it on the road when it struggles to meet the speed limit, and or meet/pass emissions, how come we're treated like such idiots for having perfectly good cars, simply because our steering wheel is on the other side?

If you said that to them I bet they would be speechless because thats exactly right. Why are these old cars able to be driven on the streets still? Those cars were made way before the cars we have now, And they say we cant import because North American has different safety regulations. Dont you think a car that is brand new would be less likely to be a safety concern rather then wait and let the car become 15 years old? I think it's just because these cars were not made here so then the Gov and North American company's are not getting anything. This is why they are trying so hard to get RHD and imported car out. Like really How could the position of the steering wheel have to do with how somebody drives it? How many LHD car get in to an accident? Not even close to how many RHD do.

I just got the same MTO letter in the mail tonight. It is brought on by their new computer program that checks VIN's on registrations versus insurance papers to check for uninsured drivers. We get picked up automatically because of the 10 digit VIN. I am gonna go to the MTO with all my paperwork and see if it can be worked out.

Its an automated letter courtesy of their new vin checking system. Its harmless.
Its just to inform you that you dont have insurance matched to a particular car (vin). Since our vins (10 digit) dont show in any north american system, it automatically flags you as not having insurance.

If you do, then your fine, dont worry. If you dont and you not driving your car, again no worries.

Everyone gets the letter if they think you dont have insurance. I got one for my 4Runner because it was just put on a policy this past few weeks. When they sent the letter it was not on any policy.

Its lhd's and rhd's, not just one or the other. I got the same letter for both cars haha.

This is nothing guys, seriously. Its just an effort to keeps uninsured vehicles off the road. It works like this...

Everyones vin number gets scanned (if the vehicles is registered)
If the vin number shows that the owner has active insurance, they get no letter.
If the vin number shows no active insurance policy, you get the letter.

Since our system cannot take 10 digit vins in our computer programs, rhd owners automatically get the letter.

No sense calling either. This came from the top down and the numbers are to people at the bottom. They do not know th ins and outs and thus give you the answer that you cant have a 10 digit vin (when in fact you can).

If your car is insured, just go about your daily routine.
