  • Stereo installation

    Hello,

How are you all doing? I just had a few questions regarding to installation of aftermarket stereo system.

    * I am not a huge fan of subs. I normally listen to rock and old school metal. I am looking to spend 1k~1.5k for everything (deck, 4 speakers, an amp if needed, dynamat, and installation)

    1. What sizes of speakers should I get for both front and rear? I am not interested in subs at all. Just need good quality speakers. Any brand / model suggestions?

    2. Should I get an amp? Any brand / model suggestions?

    3. What about decks? What brand / model is good for my purpose?

    4. Is it easy to install these DIY? FYI, I've never done such thing. Or is there a shop in 604 area that someone can recommend for this?

    5. Are there any other alternative setup someone can recommend?

    Thank you.

Hey bud. Okay, to keep the same speaker size go 4x6 in the front doors, and 6.5 in the rear. Alpine are a good moderatly priced speaker, but better quality would be JL or maybe JBL for that price.

As for decks.. I would highly recomend the Alpine CDA-9886. I have it in my car and love it!! It's got everything u need, bluetooth capabilities, ipod controllable, mp3, serius and xm... great deck!

Now for amplifier. This all depends on what speakers you get, because you want to place the right amp with ur speakers. This is critical. If you underpower something, it has more of a chance of blowing.. where if you add a lil too much, it will only take as much as it needs (to a point). Just find out what speakers you want, add up the rms power for all and find a 4 channel amplifier to match that RMS number. Soo, if each speaker is rated for 110-150 watts RMS than you would want an amplifier that puts out about no little than 500 realistically. Just make sure its a 4 channel amp to power the speakers.

As for install, are you good with electrical? If not, I would be more than willing to install. Or, you can either get a shop around here like Cartunes, Audio Video, Visions, SoundsGood.. all are very good and highly recomended. Either way man, if you have any questions just send me a pm and i'll be happy to answer any questions.

    Hope that helps.

            Disconnect battery Neg-

            Headunit:
            ---------------

            Constant power+
Using a voltameter (and ignition off) find a source that provides 12+ volts

            Accessory power 12+ volts
With the igniton on "accessory" find a 12+ power source, when this is found, turn the ignition off (still with the voltameter connected to the source). If the voltage is switched off at the voltameter when you do this, this is the one your after.

            Ground-
Connect this to the bare metal chassis, i found the metal plate in behind the console works great.

            Remote
This is the wire that switches your amp on/off VIA the headunit

            Speaker wires:
just follow the diagram that comes with the headunit. (NEVER ground the speakers to the chassis).

            RCA jacks (out)
            These goto your amp(s)

            ------------------------------------------

            Amplifier:

            POWER+
Direct a 4g (or) 8g depending on the amplifier directly to your battery power+ keeping in mind to install a vamp fuse of rating (1 foot) away from the battery.

            GROUND-
Install this from the amplifier to the bare chassis around 1 foot away if possible.

            REMOTE:
From headunit (usually the blue wire)

            RCA jacks
            From headunit (IN)

Er....this step will not work if you disconnect the battery :/

btw its better to have the 6x9s in the rear shelf and the 6 inch inb the door. The 6x9 give off more bass and bass waves increase with distance. Thus by putting them in the back parcel shelf, it increases the bass amount (but obviously being a speaker it wont be crazy bass, more punchy tones). The 6 inch in the doors will give a better sound quality then 6x9s at a close range.

Yes, the 6x9 will have better base, but will not fit unless u do custom work to the rear valance. And same with the door. U would need to custom make a mounting bracket so the speaker can fit. Otherwise the hole will be to small for the speaker. That's y u amplify all the speakers so they can handle more bass and do not distort under heavy listening.

                        dynamat?

                        these are skylines not cavaliers.

I had simple 4 speakers (alpine) and a 12" and an amp set up which was great for driving around/pleasing passengers enough to dance in car. (thanks kevin once again)

Then recently I took out the sub/amp to make some more room and try it out while waiting for batt relocation kit and plans to rewire it back.

I've been rocking four speakers only for the last month and I can't wait to get the sub back in there.

                        I listen to mostly house.

Sorry about bumping an old thread but this had 90% of the information I needed and I only had a couple questions left:

                          1. Will a 4 channel amp work for 2x front 2x back AND a sub? or what is needed for the 4chan to work with the sub also?

                          2. The back shelf in my car is currently empty, I assume 6.5's fit back there? I don't want to do any custom work to it and since it was said earlier in this thread that stock is 6.5 and 4x6 in the door I'll assume that is the same for GT-R and GTS?

                          3. From stock JDM stereo to USDM, what is needed? I know an antenna adapter (the 240sx one will work?) but is there anything else required like a mount or bracket or something?

                          Thanks for the help.

Running 5 channel with a 4 channel amp is possible. Most higher end amps can do this if they're rated as 2ohm stable, just make sure your speaker power/load ratings won't be higher than the amps power rating. IE. amp - 75 watts@4ohms x2, 150 watts@4ohms x 1, speakers should match (75w 4ohm rear, 150w 4ohm sub) or you'll cook them. If the ohm load goes lower you'll fry the amp! You'll also need a passive (speaker level) cross-over for the sub, adjustable preferably if those even exist anymore.

Your best bet is to run the rear speakers of of deck power and the sub off channels 3 and 4 (wired mono as suggested in manual) and save money for a dedicated sub amp, fade your sound on the head unit towards the front so the rears don't suffer from lack of power at higher volumes as the decks amp will lose efficiency way before the after market one. Front stage and low end are most important, rears are just for fill any how.

                            Hope this was usefull.
