  • Electrical Problems

I was on my way home and i noticed the volt meter going higher than normal. When i pulled up to my place i popped the hood and my battery was steaming. I took the battery out of the car that night and assumed i needed a new battery. Next day i put the battery back in start it up and notived the volt meter spiked to over 20 volts the second I revved up the motor a little. The windshield wipers started going and i never touched the switch, headlights burnt out, smoke came from my door and the fan motor wont shut off in the car.

The smoke from the door was the window relay so i replaced that and the windows work fine again.

What could cause something like this? Only thing i can imagine it being is the voltage regulator for the alternator. I pulled out the alternator and had it tested and they said it was ****** when they put a load on it. Is the voltage regulator part of the alternator?

That's most likely the problem. And yes the voltage regulator is part of the alternator (inside).

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do beside replacing it.

You can get that alternator rebuilt and it won't cost too much since it could still be ok and just needs a regulator.
