  • the definitive GTR transmission thread.

Okay. I'm starting this thread so we can have all of the transmission options for an R32/33/34 covered in one place.

Auto discussion is welcome but I'm focused on manuals. After we've got a lot of information built up I'll edit this post with a cliff notes version of the whole thread.

The stock 32/33 transmissions break past 400-500HP - we all know this - so what are the other options and how much do they cost?

OS Giken makes 2 gearsets that I know of - I've been told they only fit in the R33 case, but I don't know if that's fact or not, I've never compared the R32/33 differences. They make a 1/2/3 and 1-5 gearset, and seem to be the cheapest upgrade, but I'm told they break at the 700HP mark too. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

PPG and PAR both make gearsets too, unknown cost or strength.

R34 Getrag's swap in with some difficulty but people claim they aren't that great.

I just got off the phone with liberty and they said for a (BALLPARK) $5000 figure they'd give me an unbreakable syncronized 6 speed T6060 viper trans, that hooks to the engine and the transfercase without an issue, and keeps the stock shifter location exactly. This might be one of the best options as the viper trans is GREAT. I'll post more about this when I know more.

Anyways, Please provide your input and experiences on the trans issue!

PPG is about $8500 assembled (including shipping), if you remove it and install it yourself. They are not bullet proof. They need to be overhauled everything 2 years but most users tear down every year (track guys). They are noisy but somewhat streetable.

Hollinger is the best but they're over $20k I think. OSG is nice but still cost over $5k.

R33 is better than R32 but still has the same weaker gears. R34 is not much stronger than R33 and for the cost, you may aswell go with OSG or Trust if you're making big power.

I have an R33 box kicking around, ready to rock if someone wanted it. I decided to stop my project for family reasons so it's up for grabs. If you dont' drag race or smash too hard on it, some people have seen 800hp on them.

I've got the OSG Kit and I really like it. I went with the strengthened input shaft and reinforced center plate for good measure.

The gears in this kit are rated for 1200hp, however due to the limitations of the Nissan synchros above 9000rpm, it is generally best suited to applications up to 800hp.

I heard this kit you have was one of the cheapest options for big power, what did that run you?

I'm running the OSG 5 spd with new transfer case. 1st gear is 17% taller than OEM, which I actually like better. 5th is a bit shorter, but highway cruising rpm is still fine. The best part is always having the right gear available on the track.
R33 box bolts up to R32. Clutch is pull type (easy to adapt) and speedo pickup is different. Again, easy to fit the R32 pickup to the R33 gear.
Durability has been fine, but I'm only running 500 hp and only 10 track days this summer, but each one was about 40 laps.
          All good so far.

            Just throw my 2cents in.
2 times at the drag strip.
            1 R33 Tranny bearings blown.
            1 R33 Third gear exploded.

I dont think its much stronger.

GTR-Dad and others running the OSG stuff, can you share how much it cost you an d how much of that was parts/labour?

Maybe $5000 for an unbreakable trans is a reasonable price, idk. If I had a camaro it would only be $3000 lol.

I've been to the dragstrip 3 or 4 times with my R32 transmissions but gone drag racing lots more than that. How much powere were you making to break the R33 trannies?

I broke the same stuff as you - 1 the bearings went after a hard shift into 3rd, the other 3rd gear stripped entirely.

I picked mine up for $US4500 complete with new transfer case, which I think was a great deal. Didn't shop a bunch, but I wanted to go there so I grabbed it. Labour to install was part of a broader work scope so it's hard to say what it cost. Given that I'd already done the push/pull conversion to accommodate my ORC clutch, it would have cost no different than swapping an R32 box.

I've got a friend who's been building an early/mid 90's Mustang for a while and I can't get over how little he can pay for decent parts. Parts for the GTR run will over 2X what he's paying, so $5k for a gearbox that would cost $3k for a high volume domestic seems ok to me.

                  Cheers,

I'm also running an osg 1-5 box. Ratios are great and haven't had a problem with it yet at 587awhp. With my gts-4 diffs 5th is very short and 8000rpm in 5th is "only" 270km/h. It sure gets there quick though.

Bump for more info on trannys from other cars, such as the viper's T60 as noted in the OP.

edit: also curious if anybody here has experimented with a rwd only set up and if that opens up more tranny options

Isn't the OSG box also shorter ratios though they appear stock based on your top speed.

Chevy make us think they sell Allison but they don't sell full Ali boxes.

Surprised there hasn't been more input in this thread.

I'm buying a motor and breaking the transmissions I have before I upgrade at this point.
