This is a question that has been hammered on over and over. If you do a search on here you'll find answers to all your questions.
That being said. The answers to your basic questions are YES and YES. The GTR is not a Civic (no offense intended to Civic owners).
Overly expensive yes. not the easiest to trouble shoot or fix. Fun to drive but EVO X and new STIs are funner, smarter, warranty and cheaper to soup up. those who buy GTRs is cause they have a good cash flow, if they can't afford it, they sell and move on. Anyone can buy one, not everyone can afford one.
