  • Body, Engine, Transmission, Suspension, AWD ... that is ALL.

    Hey guys,

Firstly. I would like to take the time to wish all of you the best for the holiday season.

    My question is simple:
Is it possible to take a Stock GT-R and and turn it to a car with less than 7 components (mechanical)
    1- Body
    2-Engine
    3-transmission
    4-Suspension (including brakes and Tires)
    5-AWD system
6- interior (2 racing seats and a dash)

    thank you for your help.

You can do that if you run a carbed v8. But you cant get away from the electrical on an Japanese turbo charge engine. Japanese=electric...

If you're talking about a late model Z (I'm not to familiar with the Z's) then its probably carb... Would you put that L28 engine if your gtr??? Think not. My point was if you have a newer vehicle with fuel injection, O2 sensor etc. You can't get away from all the electrical...
Time attack gtr's have been striped down to the essentials, but you can only take out so much.

I must have wrongly expressed my intentions,

What I meant in all of that is that I would like to remove all unnecessary parts on my GTR to make it as light as possible and as nimble as possible while still keeping it street legal.

Again sorry for the misunderstanding that my poorly structured question could have caused.

Not to bitch at you but there are plenty of threads regarding weight reduction on here and gtr.co.uk, a little search would have gone a long way.

but in all seriousness, you could possibly remove around 100kgs > 150kgs and still be street legal. However, seeing as that you're in Montreal and police here do not like Skylines you're out of luck at doing anything drastic to your car. the best thing you can do for weight is remove the sound deadening (under interior carpet), hicas, air-con and awd.

other than that you'll be pushing your luck with the SAAQ and their inspections.
The GT-R doesn't run on gas, but on the tears of children.

i dont run any OEM wiring in my RB26 Cefiro.

I use a painless wiring kit. Its one of the only street legal wiring kits you can buy.

But really, The japs are not much different than other car makers. The engine literally needs 3 wires to run on the oem harness. Then hook up your alt and batt and starter. power up the AWD ecu which is similar to powering up the engine ecu.

i did utilize the OEM eng harness but its pretty simple. I run d-jetro so the maf side of the harness is completely eliminated and the injector resistor is located in the cabin next to the ecu. i power the harness inside the car as well so there really isnt too much in it anymore.

Don't listen to the nay-sayers....in the immortal words of Colin Chapman: "Simplicate, then add lightness."

(Caveat - I don't know what the rules are in Quebec or with your insurance company regarding modifications, so you'll need to research that yourself)

YES - there's lots of things you can do to simplify and reduce weight. It gets to be a bit of a sickness, as you find yourself trying to reduce weight in grams as time goes on, and it is quite a challenge (but fun). First off, don't expect your car to be worth much after all the work is done - unless you sell it to someone who will track it, no one wants a car that has gone through this procedure. Second, find a shop that has a good 4-corner race scale set-up and get a baseline done. That way, you know where you're starting from. Then, go get the car re-weighed every so often to track you progress and monitor weight distribution. Our cars are nose-heavy, so pay particular attention to removing weight from the front.

                              Some easy ones:

                              - Air conditioning (the whole thing, including the radiator thingy under the dash)
                              - sound deadening under the carpets
                              - replace front seats with the lightest ones you can afford. If you're putting a cage in, I'd suggest Kirkey aluminum seats, though they need a back brace
                              - replace hood with FRP or CF
                              - remove interior trim
                              - remove stereo (including speakers, wiring, antenna, amp, etc.)
                              - remove trunk trim/interior panels, spare tire
                              - remove any wire and metal bracket you don't need (I've found quite a few of these)
                              - Replace solid swaybars with hollow ones
                              - Lighter wheels
                              - Convert power accessories to manual and remove servos/actuators. These are usually quite heavy, so they can make a difference. For instance - power trunk release, rear window wiper, power locks, power windows (I'm still on the look-out for manual winder mechanism that would fit on my R33),
                              - Replace dash with FRP/CF/aluminum unit
                              - tubular front-end (this is a big-time modification, so you better have a good fabricator)

Lot's of other ideas out there. Look to racers, racer websites/forums, etc. for more information.
