It'll be cheaper to build a real box like quaife, PPG or OSG, I think, and they will be stronger than an OEM R34 box. The cost (until now maybe) of converting to an R34 box was as expensive as upgrading to OSG gears which are better. Would be a good deal if it were under $5k ya?Black 1991 GTR. That's $10,748.30 cdn with most likely about $400 shipping plus 18.5% taxes and duty. So $13,210.74 with the twin plate. Ouch.
You can go OS-88 for that kind of money and not have to worry unless you start going over 1100hp.
Jon.Why don't you come over to MySpace and Twitter my Yahoo untill I Google all over your Facebook.

Dragon, I totally agree with ya mate.
Why did Nissan even give the R34 a 6th gear? Or Why didn't Nissan give the R32 & R33 a 6th gear?Last edited by bellis_GTR; 04-05-2011, 08:34 PM.Heart rate 160, I'm goin 260, RB26 run me past you in a jiffy

Jon.
OS -88 RETAILS at 15 gs mate and yes its a amazing tranny but u need to RE overhaul the tranny eevry 5000 km
a 6 SPEED GETRAG is gonna be better for street driving and it will be good for the rest of a lifetime of the car if its not a idiot that drive it and someone that will spend that kind of money will switch the tranny oil every 10 000 km in my book
both are good
just ddepend on what type of use of the car u will do
someone that has a trailer whore ok go wit the os-88
but for a fellow 500-600 whp gtr that wants the pefect gear box and everything is new
wow its worth that kind of money!

OS 1-3 gears are worth the money if you are under 600hp, my tranny is stock and holding up to 600hp just fine.
If you shop around you can get and OS-88 for about $14500 shipped with the quad plate (you don't need any of the other stuff if you can fabricate). An OS-88 is a dog engaugement, sequential, helical cut geared tranny that will last you at least 100k kms if you treat it right. You don't need to rebuild it all the bloody time if you are not tracking it every weekend and don't drive it like a bonehead. If you use the clutch for every shift you can make it last a very long time. Hell, even if it only lasts 50,000km before a refresh that would still give me 10 years of service (my GTR is a summer only toy).
$13500 for a Getrag is way to much for what it is, it's a standard issue, stock tranny that only has one overdrive gear and first is WAY to low for 4.10 gears. I know some say that it's a lot of fun, but honestly, you will be using 2nd gear to start out when you are daily driving because shifting out of 1st at 15km/h will get old in a hurry. Swting to 3.54 R34 gears will add at least another $1500 to the bill if you don't know how to do that yourself. It would be silky smooth and could handle at least 700hp for a long time, but for $15,000 (with the gears) I would rather go PPG syncro and pocket about $7000.

OS Giken FTW.
Close ratio 5 speed is great. I can always find the right gear and it's solid.
Having said that, the only reason I changed from OEM was because the old box was getting very tired. Not broken, but syncros were going and it was time...
