  • Shell V Power 91 w/o a Tune in a 1990 GTR?

So.. im still new to the gtr world, and the gtr i picked up has always used 94 octane from petro according to the privous owner. I was at the skymeet and was talking to a dude who said i should beable to run 91 v power from shell w/o a tune. (obviously a tune in the future would be a good idea) but i heard that 94 from petro which contains up to 10% ethinol is pretty much the same as 91 vpwr with no ethinol?

Basiclly im wondering if i can run 91 vpwr from shell instead of 94 from petro w/o causing any issues? I have heard it has been done w/o a tune just wanna make sure.

Its not the price, its that the closest petro with 94 octance is atleast 45min to a hr away, and theres a shell just in town. The past month i have been just filling jarry cans with 94 when im near one to take home.

    Thanks

Yup. 91 is what's generally recommended, since 60% of the population has a hard time sourcing 94 in their areas to begin with.

Shell is good gas, but then again this can run into a whole other debate.

My car is tuned with 91.. And as far as i can tell between this tune, and the last (on 94), there is really no substantial difference.

91 will be fine, from any retailer (The big retailers that is .. Petro/Shell etc)

You can only really get the benefits of ethanol enriched gas if you are tuned for it.

The ethanol mixture increases octane rating and reduces knocking/pinging, which, if you get tuned for it, lets you achieve higher power numbers then regular gas of the same rating.

The only reason to run ethanol 94 without being tuned would be is if you are seeing knock on 91, in which case you should get retuned anyways, or if you want to be on the safe side until you get retuned. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say their car didn't run properly on 91 though.

I don't know much about the added benefits of the nitro enriched Vpwr.

On a side note, ALL fuel in Canada now has a min. of 5% Ethanol in it, ALL of it. It was a federal mandate that came into effect as of Jan. 1st of this year.

Unfortunately, Chevron 94, even with 5% Ethanol in it still isn't as good as what Mohawk 94 used to be. With the little price war that Chevron had in Kamloops in the last few weeks I decided to do some experimenting with the 94, my knock feedback on my Caprice doesn't lie, I couldn't push the ign. timing as far as I could with the Mohawk.

I would run Mohawk 91 as they tend to squeek a little more than the min. 5% Ethanol into the fuel (you can really smell it). The knock feedback in my Caprice was nearly identical between the Chevron 94 and the Mohawk 91.

Base stock fuel is all the same anyways. The companies may add there own additives such as techron for chevron but at least for vancouver everything is Esso base stock so unless comparing additives its all the same. The gas companies sanction this as a trade or sharing so they can avoid taxes

Octane levels with the gtr has always been a question for me.....now i thought i read somewhere (correct me if im wrong) but in japan its supposed to run on 100 RON....right? And with the whole conversion from RON to usa octane rating it should technically need about 96oct to run how it was set up from the factory. But no place sells 96....lol especially where i am. So I throw in 93oct from BP

The Whole ethanol thing is a political shinanigan anyway , talking to my brother who works on the oil cracking tower projects Saudi , he told me it actually takes more energy expenditure to extract and process the ethanol than you get from it. Apparently sweet crude is still the most efficiant fuel for automobiles when comparing joules to produce the fuel vs joules the fuel supplies!

It takes about 1.4 gallons of ethanol to produce a gallon of ethanol ! LOL

On another side note, it might pay to pop the panel off and make sure you still have a stock ecu....

In my '92 I had a tomei tuned ECU, ran 1.3 bar all the time on 91 octane, zero problems.

These cars have knock sensors. You could run it on 87 without hurting it. (it won't run well, or perform worth a ****, but it'll run).

Run the highest octane you have locally available and don't sweat the rest.

Regular fuel in Japan is about 92 PON and their "hi-ocu" premium is about 98 PON, it really smells like race gas. RON would be in the 108 range for the premium. This is the main reason for the big ignition timing #'s that are usually lurking in a J-tuned ECM. It can be done though, I have been running the bulk of the J-tune in my Power FC with only a few tweaks to improve boost response. If you have a pig rich J-tune you can add a gallon of Methanol to your tank at fillup and everything will be just right (oddly I didn't really need to as my tune was nice and crisp).

When I want to run 1.5bar and 700hp in the heat of summer I will add 2 gallons of Tolulene and 1 gallon of Methanol to my tank with Mohawk 91 and never have to worry about detination. Even at 32 deg. of ignition timing, hey, if you want to play, you have to pay. Costs me $35 on top of a full tank of 91. If it's below 25deg outside and I won't go over 1 bar, 91 is all good (Mohawk ofcourse).

They have it, they just won't say they have it.

All fuel base stock is now 85 PON octane, the 5% Ethanol bumps that up to 87. As of Jan. 2010 all major metro areas went to this formula (Toronto, Winipeg, Cal, Edm, Van.....etc). As of Jan. of this year it spread to ALL fuels sold in Canada. It sucks because Mohawk is now lumped in with the rest of the crap out there (87, 89, 91), HOWEVER, recent testing by yours truely has found that the Moh still has it over the competition. Mohawk 91 tested equal to Chevron 94 and Shell, Esso and Petro 91 didn't even come close (especially the Esso, it really sucked).
