Don't know about where you're from, but in Ontario we have these guys that drive around (MTO - Ministry of Transportation of Ontario) and have more authority on the roads than cops (or at least the same authority).

If you consent to a search, or a cop has reasonable doubt or whatever, they can search and ticket you for every thing they find. Lame, yet a scary tactic of enforcing the law against us emission control evaders.

ya, they can't search w/o probable cause.

You shouldn't consent a search w/o asking for reason anyways.

^+1 No warrent, no entry with out permission. Unless they have evidence vehicle was used in a crime, ie. smuggling drugs, "BNE'S", someone saw me club and stuff the hooker in my trunk last weekend...

As for the flying dipstick, I topped up the oil in -30 (Dec.) and started burning oil, shooting the stick, and wet engine bay - parked til spring. Fired up in spring, no burning oil or missile stick!? My only guess is frozen pvc, pressure would build after a few miles forcing oil past the vavle seals until the stick popped.

^+1 No warrent, no entry with out permission. Looking into unattended vehicles is also an illegal search.

Agreed but make sure you do it in a polite manner, if you are a jerk or disrespectful they will do whatever they can to lay any charge they can on you. Acting in a reasonable and polite manner translates into reasonable and polite treatment by the authorities 99% of the time.

Very true, I always stay professional when face to face with the law.

                        However,

Unfortunately you WILL seldomly get the police officers who have bad days and regardless of your situation will still be the power hungry vindictive douchebag who will ruin your day.
