  • Possibly buying 1990 GT-R Skyline coupe, need some advice

    Hey everybody.

So I'm looking at purchasing this car (1990 GT-R coupe), but there are a few problems with it, some fairly severe. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I've been looking at buying something to work with while still having something to ride around in. Plus, they're sooo cool.

    Anyway, here are the details:
    • awd is not working and stopped working shortly after seller installed a new clutch, has not driven it since. Says there is a ground wire under car that is not connected.
    • car does not turn over, he says there was a rank intake sound and it sounds bogged when he tried to apply gas
    • there is some damage and rust on the front quarter panel from a hit and run
    • about 100,000kms
    • speedo doesn't work
    • wants $5,500 for it

So what do you all think? I'm pretty hesitant especially for the price and condition but I trust your opinions more than my own.

    Thanks

Simply put: back away not today lol.

Seriously though, depending on damage it may be worth looking at but I doubt this car was properly maintained judging by the short list of details.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone else have any input? I would really appreciate it and don't expect to hear great or affirming news. I need some solid-ish answers.

I also have an update. Talked to the guy again and I've got him down to $4000. My initial price range was between 5-7 grand, so I'm wondering if at 4g I can afford expensive repairs possibly rebuilding the engine. Is this feasible? Again, any advice would be great.

assume youll be replaceing the engine - can grab a good used one for around 3000 from the importers , body work if its rusty - a decent repair and paintjob can easily reach 3-4000k .

By the time youhave a good condition drivable car youll have spent around 10k , just spend 10k on a very good r32 gtr in the first place and saveyourself the aggravation .

I can back this up from personal experience. you will have headache after headache trying to cut corners like this, as I did. it'll end up costing you more than a mint and clean car, like it did for me.

the cars from usedregina right? lol. I'll give you a firm answer...Stay the fu(k away from it. since u mentioned u don't know much about mechanics.

Save you're 5 grand and save another 3-5 g's and get a decent r32. trust me, those aren't small fixer uppers. It will quicky add up.

If you don't have a pile of cash/mechanical ability a GTR just isn't the right car. You could probably find a WRX for around $7G.
Your asked for advice from this site and there are some VERY knowledgable people on here.Take the advise you have read.

Just a decent engine rebuild with quality parts your looking at around 10g... The price of another car... There's nothing cheap about a gtr

Exactly. These are one of the most expensive cars to maintain.

Agreed project cars are awesome but if your looking for a car just to drive and tinker with then only buy a gtr if it's in good condition with fairly low mileage. Don't buy somebody else's headache. Don't be discouraged from buying a gtr though I love mine, and it's been pretty reliable so far (only 13000 clicks though) with only one issue that I fixed for free. In my opinion don't buy that one. Look for one that needs nothing.

5k will buy you a mint gtst. As everyone else said stay away from a car with huge problems. especially one with an owner who referrs to problem sounds as "rank"

I just picked up a GTR about a month ago, seller said it needed a clutch. So far I'm into it for a clutch, brakes, has blown coilovers, half the bolts on the intake were only in half way, camber arms are totally out to lunch, tires are bald and separating, HVAC doesn't work, alignment is screwed, and lots of little ****.
Luckily I'm a mechanic, so labour is free, but over a month and I'm still fixing ****.
If possible, get your prospect car inspected before you buy it'll save you in the long run.
                            Good luck!
