  • R34 DOT issues? (Preplanning)

    Hey guys,

I know it's still some time away - but the closer the date gets, the more excited I get. I plan on importing an R34 GTR when the time comes. However, theres something thats been bugging me, and a few local guys tell me it won't be legal.

Headlights. I understand that the headlights are aimed the wrong direction since they are RHD vehicles. I've been told most people who go the "legal" route on R32/R33 swap headlights from a different model vehicle that fit, from USDM market. (I THINK accord headlights? I may be wrong).

I've been told there are no USDM headlights that fit the R34, and thus - no way to legally do it.

Are you able to get a company to modify the OEM R34 headlights, to be aimed the correct way here? If so, how do you go about getting them "DOT approved"?

    Thanks!

I'm pretty sure all R34 lights are DOT stamped. I can check a set I have at home in a few weeks...

So, even if they are not adjusted to face the correct way in canada - a DOT stamp will still allow them to be legal? (Note: I'd still want to have them adjusted, i'd rather not endanger people lol)

It depends where you live in Canada. I know guys in BC have to swap R32 lights for inspections, but we don't have to in Ontario

It's not just the way the lights point, it's also the housing. The glass or material they used in Japan wasn't tested to DOT requirements. So if the housing don't have DOT on them then unfortunately they won't pass inspect. That being said the place I got my inspection done didn't care about my headlights for some reason hehe

Gotcha, well I hope at very least they have DOT stamped on them so I can get them aimed correctly.

Safety inspection i'm not worried about, i'm worried about Winnipeg Police "VIU" pulling me over. They already are a special group doing "push test" with their hand on fenders to check if it "too stiff". They eat people alive practically.

                Anyway:

From what I hear the R34 had DOT lights. And we have the luxury (lol) of being in manitoba, so finding a flat road to point the headlights isn't too hard to do. The rest of the DOT seatbelts, lines and misc stuff won't be too hard to get made up.

Also get a DOT and safety inspection booklet from MPI and keep it in your glove box or under your seat. If you're planning on modifying the car there's also a booklet of what modifications will be allowed to pass safety. These WILL come in handy if you ever run into the VIU, as they very well could get you out of a ticket for something that could be compliant with the Highway Traffic Act.

Or you could just not drive around on sunday night. Just my .02

Not trying to scare you, just want to get a fellow manitoban prepared for manitoban sports car politics.

                Happy GT-R'ing

plus duty and gst and pst.... looking at a $60,000 car... even when the first r32 gtrs came over they were not even close to half that

Unless you're looking at very very clean v-specs, I don't think your information is accurate. When I was looking through Yahoo Auctions Japan I was seeing GTR's non-vspec in good condition in the 30-35k (CAD) range. Also spoke with a few different Canadian import companies to see what they said, and they estimated entry price landed will be in the 35k range.

                    http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w76338606 That's 26k canadian dollars.

                    http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h165760928 28k canadian dollars

http://page2.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b133996471 Another expensive one, 53k - But it's also Vspec with 34k km's and a single owner, in black pearl paint.

I'd love to hear what newalliance123 has to say about if those R34 headlights really are in fact stamped DOT, which would be freakin' awesome but I'm pretty certain they won't be . But if they are that would probably make life a whole lot easier bringing it here and legalizing it and stuff.

The way I see it, if the headlights are DOT, all you would really need to legalize the car here would be some rear marker lights, front reflectors (if there are front amber parking lights in the headlights, which I'm pretty certain of there is) and DOT tires, and windows to have AS1/AS2 markings on them (which all of them should have I'm guessing).

Man, I'm already getting excited thinking about bringing in a R34 GT-T!! I'd love to get a nice low mileage black R34 with a GT-R front bumper here in BC

most people dont buy off yahoo auctions. nor are those auctions finished.

i have seen what these cars go for.

very low end. 2 milliom r grade stuff.

                        high end 5 million

half of the 34s were vspec ii.

as for gt-t they fetch around 500,000jpy

What auction sites are you looking at? Can you post a link?

just curious, as the 35k range is what several importers told me...just wondering why theres such a descrepentcy between you and the other importers.

I think that website helps strengthen what I said if anything....

Quick google search tells me the higher the grade the better, a grade 4 is..

"Vehicle in good condition, few scratches/dents due to normal wear as you would get with any normal vehicle."

Those 2 ones circled in red are both under 35k, and are both vspec in the range of 100k km's.

There was also a non-v spec with 94k km's at a grade 3.5 for 25k Canadian. (3.5 = Vehicle has a few scratches or dents visibly. The grade is usually given to a vehicle in average condition.)

Unless you're looking for a grade 4.5+ vspec with less then 60k km's - I can't see any 60k+ cars there....There was only 2 4,000,000yen GTR Vspecs in that list.

Am I missing something? Again, not trying to sound like a douche - just trying to find where your getting your numbers from.
