Child Seat in R32 ?

Okay, maybe this is strange for a car like this, but anybody do this? I tried fitting my Britax seat in the back of the R32 last summer and it actually fit great and the deep bucket sets really held it in place nicely. Using the Seatbelt mounting option worked well. I'm concerned that there doesn't seem to be a factory tether point for the top tether. Has anybody been able to find one or add something? Not looking to put my 3 year old in any kind of danger ....

There should be some sort of anchor point on the rear parcel shelf. I have installed child seat tethers in quite a few cars (I'm an auto tech) usually if you look at the underside of the shelf (from the trunk) you should be able to find an anchor point. I guess worst case scenario you could make your own anchor point.

No tether and the seat belts don't lock so you can't use that unless you get lockers. Anything older than 2002 doesnt have latch so it can't legally carry A child seat without modifications approved (I think the firehalls can check them).

My wife and 1 year old were in a bad accident last year which wrong off the suv and the baby seat so we learned lots. If something happened and insurance found out (which they almost always do) something wasn't right, they could cut off or even void insurance... My wife is still going through weekly medical stuff after a year and it's not cheap. Imagine a baby seat being incorrectly installed!

Thanks for the replies guys. I think Nismo is right and dont think there is any tether point at all no lockers either. I believe the Aussie guys are talking about 33's and 34's. I've been looking into this since last summer and have not found anything about the 32's.

My friend is a firefighter and another one is a cop in metro so i'll check with those guys too but think i already have my answer . There is a free 'car seat course' here where hey will check out your setup as well ... I'm sure i could change belts and add a tether easy enough but safety is the main concern.

For now he stays in my 2010 F150 Supercrew 4X4 (haha - just a little safer!!) or the wifes pontiac torrent

Not that it will llikely affect too many guys here, but it is totally possible to safely put a child seat in the back of an R32. I was pulling the parcel shelf to replace it and change out the speakers ... there are factory punched holes right there for tethers. You can easily find 'Safety First' or other brand tether points that bolt right in and if your child seat is equipped to properly use the back seatbelts in an R32 it works just fine. The Britax seats we have work great and according to the manufacturers specs are okay to use with these belts. Just an FYI

Oh BTW, I'm not a mechanic, policeman, firefighter or legally authorized to check car seats so take this posting for what it is ... some guy on an internet forum. If you try this you need to have it checked out by somebody legally authorized to give an approval.

FYI, for insurance purposes the seat install should be inspected by a fire fighter or certified inspector. I know this because when our car was written off and the baby was in it, the first thing they went after was proof of inspection (they claimed wrong install and wouldn't cover the seat replacement or treament to the infant had it been installed without approval.

Most seats require the latch system which was released in 2002 so old cars would need to be modified. If the seat belt is used, it must be of the locking type which I know the skylines weren't until r34

I think an inspection is $40 and if you're willing to put a kid in the back seat of a car that crumples (horrible crash rating); better make sure it's safe!!

I bought a new truck so I could tow my kids around rather than modifying the 20 year old beater

Tether Anchor

I actually did this on the week end. I couldn't find myself any info on that either. So, I dismantle everything in the back ( got some new back window trims from Nissan ) so I had to anyway. Bassicaly found a universal tether anchor at Nissan and found a flat washer and a nut that would fit with the it. Drilled a 3/4 hole in the speaker trim for the tether and used an original hole from the trim that uses the white press in plug to hold it down, pretty solid actually

Forgot to say that I used thread lock just to be sure that the nut wouldn't come loose. Better yet, if you can find a nylon nut !

I had no idea you needed inspections of car seats? Must be a mainland thing? I'm sure when the time comes for me, I'll be using the proper seat and tether system, along with 3"wide ratchet straps lol.

I've been looking into this since last summer and have not found anything about the 32's.

Child safety seat was an option for R32 GTS from Nissan (R32 optional part catalogue) and it's said that the seat was made in France (scroll down to see photo) -

Again, anybody thinking about this needs to have their install inspected. Ontario has free clinics, car seat centres and such and they even have installers who will chanrge $30-$50 for an install if you can't figure it out.

The seat you use has to be legally authorized for use with the seat belt type found in your car. Most modern seats have multiple mounting options. LATCH or EMS is only one style and not required (in Ontario anyway according to the MTO). Plenty of people still drive older cars and the seat manufactuers recognize this.

Our seats were in the $500 each range and have consistently ranked some of the best in testing. I think our seats had options for 4 or 5 different types of seat belts and the Nissan ones are listed. The seats we use have built in locking tabs to work with the ELR belts.

Please have an inspection.
