  • Idle miss + smoke.

Hi. I have this idle misses problem when my car gets warmed up. +, it'll smoke... It smell unburt gas. Just asking for your opinion. I have 2 coilpack that are probably going, when I take them out of the engine running remaining plugged, I can see the voltage ARC going to the engine. But the car doesn't miss when pulled hard. I also have this Veilside Tuned ECU... Which could be tuned with different injectors / setup? Could the Coilpack make my car misses/ smoke at idle...?

    Setup is :

    R32 1992 GTR
    R33 motor
    RS-580 turbos
    Stock injectors
    Stock maf
    Stock coilpacks
    Aftermarket Intercooler
    Veilside ECU.

    Here's a short 42 second video

Maybe a burnt exhaust valve too. I'll keep u posted.

Sounds like failed coilpacks. But sometimes can be o2 sensor + ECU making engine go lean, rich, lean, rich, etc.

check the coil packs, that will tell you it you have solid spark, assuming good plugs with proper gap, since you have a tunes ecu I say a hair less on the gap, then a compression test will tell the rest/ valves or maybe low compression. sounds way too rough too be O2, typically a bad o2 puts the ecu in limp mode and you get different symptoms,

When o2 sensor makes ECU run engine lean it can lean missfire. That usually means it's a ECU tune problem and common when engine has mods. Sometimes a intake airleak of some kind (intake hose clamps are loose, slight leak in intake plenum to head gasket, headgasket leak on oil side to cylinder or engine bay side) can cause it. The amount of seconds the pop occurs in usually gives it away (5-10 seconds for o2 sensor). But it also can be due to failed coilpack, as when ECU fires a leaking coilpack in the firing order it doesn't fire properly hence the missfire every few seconds or so. So amount of seconds it happens in can help to tell you which it is.

Black tip on one sparkplug tells you coilpack is not firing properly (leaking) on one cylinder. It cracks along the seam joining the 2x halfs of coilpack together, just under mounting bracket on both sides and it leaks onto mounting bracket.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'll start by changing the 2 coilpack by known working ones. Probably recheck for leaks too. Last time I checked I had none but hey, that's 8 months ago. I know I have the good O2 sensor since im running a r32 ECU with R33 motor. R32 O2 = skinny one. But that doesn't take out the chances they're shots. I'm planning on getting a Consult cable to do better diagnostic. I just don't know if consult cable work with tuned mine's/veilside ecu.
