  • Insurance Problems in Ontario

Hi guys, I know there have been previous posts on this topic but those were from years ago and times are changing (for the worse) with respect to insurance coverage.

I live in Ontario in Mississauga and I am finding it impossible to find any insurance companies to cover me for a Skyline because it is RHD. I have a clean driving record that's not the problem, the problem happens as soon as I tell them those three words....RHD. It's been a dream of mine to own a GTR but I can't buy one if no one will insure me.

I tried some of the companies that used to do it like Lant, but nowadays they will only insure it if it is 25 years or older.

Does anyone know of any companies in Ontario that will still provide coverage (besides Facility because their rates are insane).

    Thanks!

Sorry to say, anyone who knows a place and has insurance with them, wont give them up for fear of them slamming the door shut there is still 4 companies out there, just have to send massive amounts of emails to every company in the known universe :/

I guess I'll keep hunting around. But I'm starting to think its not a good idea to buy a Skyline if companies don't want to insure them. In the furture I may be stuck with a car I can't drive or sell inside of Ontario

3 more places that I was told about have closed up their doors in the last 2 months of me calling(had successful quote from one and everything then they said no when I called the next time).
I have 2 tickets and a claim and I've managed to get reasonable(3g/yr no limits dailied) insurance so keep up hope.
If you want to know how I found the company I googled around for rhd insurance in ontario and ended up on a nicco forum as well as a facebook page.

Honestly I dont even drive my car anymore, i am 28 and i pay 259 a month on top of my truck and truck payment. its killer.

Good luck finding insurance, i would recommend waiting till you are older ie over 25 and have no tickets on your record.

I'm with "facility" I'm Newfoundland, but they are across Canada. Not the best price but it's pretty much the only company that covers skylines where I'm from.
Come on lotto!!! Daddy needs a whole lotta stuff!

Seems like Facility is the only place that will do it here as well. If I search hard enough I may find another place that will do it as people say there are others, but the trend seems to be that they are all closing up shop. What a bummer.

I'm going to be truthful... There's still places that will do it, but no one is going to give up the goods for the fear of policies being dropped. I went through the process a little while ago. I'll even give you started. RBC can do it, and so can State Farm (though you have to have a policy with them for more then 6 months, and have a second car).

Also, even when you know that they can write the policy, they still might not depending on how cool you are with the agent.

I'd wait till you're a bit older, or just skip on the dream (and purchase something else).

Did you ever try Steers? That's who I'm with and I pay $667 a year for full coverage. Less than what I pay for my 2007 Ford Focus which is only worth a few thousand bucks now.

It's brutal what you guys in Ontario have to go through for insurance, most of the idiots who make up those policies and think we're rolling down the road in killing machines just because the steering wheel is on the right side of the car have never driven or even been a passenger in a RHD car.

Most of the RHD cars we have are in better mechanical condition than alot of the heaps of junk they have no problem insuring. Back where I'm from you don't even have to have an inspection done on a vehicle unless it changes owners or you let the registration expire... so you could have a piece of crap car/truck that you bought and had inspected 15 years ago and still have it on the road falling apart. We had an old truck at work that we used for bringing garbage to the dump, plywood for a back window, door handles broken so you had to open the windows and reach outside to get out, the key couldn't be taken out of the ignition ( the key was the gearshift handle, pull it off the steering column and take it with you lol), to get it out of park the engine had to be turned off and you had to push in the lock for the shifter on the steering column with a screwdriver and yet the insurance company had no problem insuring that piece of $hit.

It seems like insuring my left hand converted r32 gtr isnt a problem in Ontario... full coverage with collision and full use for $1200 a year...

The only reason I bought it was because it was left hand drive in the first place...after i sold my Canadian 1993 300zxtt...
both cars are/were great... everyone needs a GTR in their life at some point... cant wait till spring

Who did you get insurance on it as a Lhd? I asked about doing that with a few companies and they said that's even worse cause its modified

Talking to an agent on the phone doesn't always mean you'll get accurate or even true information sadly.

I wanted to convert to LHD since 2006 but the problem is the cost of this... It's quite brutal. Nearly impossible now that my turbo kit is too big and it just can't work unless I have a double or triple jointed steering column assembly...
                              No build thread.
