  • Derek's GTR build

okay so after 2 years of having the GTR i think its finally time to start a build thread about my car haha, its nothing crazy, just another one of the many gunmetal R32 GTR's out there.

i was actually thinking about selling it, when i came across a super good deal on a rediculously nice GTR from global auto, but it sold before i could sell mine, then i saw a nice Nismo version GTR on the boards here, so i was gonna buy that and hten sell mine after, but then i realized that i like mine alot more than the nismo.. so here we are.

I dont really drive the car all that much, it sits in storage when its winter time, and only comes out in the summer, and also i enjoy wrenching, so i always find something to tinker with on the car, or parts to swap out unnecessarily.. haha.

i sourced this car back in 07, took me a long time actually, as im picky as hell, but i finally found this one and had Adam check it out and handle all the export stuff on the japan side for me, importing was done by myself, its actually much easier than most people think.

the car looked like this when i first got it:

it actually looked quite similar to Daryl's GTR

the interior was pretty weird.. i wouldnt say ugly, but some bits of it was definately borderline gay.

they steam cleaned the engine bay, looks pretty clean at a quick glance, but its really damn dirty underneath it all, and also im pretty anal about trying to make things look as clean as possible.. so needless to say all those wires and hoses and zipties definately had to go.

at this point, i was very happy with the car, ran a compression test when it landed and it checked out at 155-160 all across, exact milage is unknown as it has a nismo 320km cluster swapped in, but it has all the service records and according to those, id guess its around 100,000ish km. not that it really matters, all i cared about was how it ran, and it ran nice and smooth

the mods that it came with is as follows:

    -Nismo front bumper
    -Nismo Front hood lip
    -Nismo Side skirts
    -Nismo Trunk lip spoiler
    -Nismo 320km speedo
    -Nismo single plate clutch
    -MINE'S sports catalytic converter
    -MINE’S tuned OHLINS coilovers
-R34 GTR BREMBO 4 piston calipers front
    -ENDLESS CC-R brake pads
    -Top Secret front tension rods
    -HKS intercooler piping kit
    -Apex'i AVC-R boost controller
    -Apex'i power intakes
    -Fujitsubo downpipe
    -Fujitsubo Legalis SUPER-R 3.5” catback
    -Tomei Hicas lock
-Recaro SPG full bucket drivers seat and Recaro SRD Reclineable passenger seat
    -6000k HID's
-N1 headlights (the real ones, not the gtst ones)

i did the following when it landed:

oil change, Motul 300V 10w40 and an oem nissan filter
changed tranny fluid with Motul Gear 300 75w90
changed diff fluid front and rear with Motul PA90
changed the spark plugs with NGK iridium 6's
flushed the rad, in the summer i run plain distilled water and redline water wetter, when i put it into storage it gets another flush with 50/50 antifreeze

then i drove it for a season or 2 like that, didnt really change anything on it till recently.

i bought a set of Zeal Function coilovers for it, and a set of 18x10+20 Nismo LMGT1's with 255/35/18 AD07 neova's, and then it looked like this:

then ofcourse, being the way that i am, i decided to change them a few months later, and sold off the Zeals and am selling the LMGT1's as we speak.

got a set of Buddy clubs P1 Racing QF in 18x10+12 on the way now, not the cheapo ugly regular P1's, they are the super light forged ones also have a set of 265/35/18 Advan A048 mediums to wrap them in.

and right now im deciding wether to go with Tein monoflex's or Zeal function T's...

anyways. so as i was saying eariler, the interior was kinda gay, so i changed it around, unfortunately, the asshole who owned the car before drilled a couple holes into the dash to mount the ugly apex'i boost gauge, so now theres 2 ugly holes showing ...

heres what i did to the interior:

-replaced the drivers Reacro SPG that was all ripped up on the side with a minty Recaro SRD to match the passenger seat, the middle insert doesnt match though.. so im gonna get both of them redone in plain black.
-CF/Kevlar 2 din panel with 3 52mm Omori meter's, black face with red needle and red led backlight
-changed the backlight in the tach/speedo cluster to red led to match
-45mm Blitz boost gauge on the steering column, also changed the backlight to red led so they all match.
-white led's for the dome and map lights
-re-routed the wiring for the Apex'i AVC-R and mounted the controller in the glove box
-Oldschool Nismo 350mm steering wheel ( i love the oldschool nismo logo, and also this way it matches the speedo )
-nismo GT shift knob... but im probably gonna sell it and get the titanium one soon.

i think it looks much better now

ive still got to install the aluminum GTR dead pedal that i bought from the group buy on here awhile back, but ive also ordered a set of R34 GTR pedals so ill wait till those get here and will put them all in together.

heres what the enging bay looks like right this minute:

im cleaning it up right now, removing everything that it doesnt need, like removing the stock boost soleniod, cleaning up some random unhooked vaccume lines that were unhooked due to the Apex'i AVC-R, the wiring from the HID was horrible and ugly so i hid all those aswell. still a work in progress, but its going.. oh and you can see what i mean when i say its dirty underneath the shiney bits from eariler in some of the pics.

got rid of most of the other cars i had.. heres what the driveway looked like at one point, my parents were all like because they had to park their cars on the street, and i was all like ... lol.

theres also a gtst that didnt fit in the pic too... but anyways. sold the GTST, the S14 Silvia K's, the JDM WRX... so i have room and time for the GTR again haha.

got tons of new parts on order, so i just gotta wait till they get here and then i can do another update.. mostly parts that goes in the engine or engine bay in general

too lazy to make a current mods list of whats in the car right now, but ill do that when i have the new parts in..

    MORE TO COME!

                    update!

rigged up a little something for the radiator today.

first of all.. i HATE random wires or hoses poking out of random places and being run randomly in the engine bay, they just look out of place, and ugly.

so i made a trip to the local princess auto and home depot today and rigged up an adapter for my Omori water temp gauge sensor, it used to have an adapter in the upper rad hose, but the wire for the sensor was bright shiney silver and all crooked, that and the adapter itself looked ugly aswell.

i noticed that the oem temp gauge was mounted in the bottom endtank of the radiator, and i also noticed that the threads was the same size and pitch as the one on the Omori sensor, so i brought my oem temp sensor with me and went digging at Princess Auto, and found a 3/8" 3 way tee fitting, threaded the temp sensor into the fitting and VOILA! perfect fit!

so then i found 2 fittings for either end of the tee, one to go into the raditor, and the other for the Omori sensor, kinda hard to explain, but if youve ever seen one, the nut is not attached to the sensor itself, and is used to wedge the sensor into an adapter to hold it in place and to seal it, theres a shoulder on the shaft of the sensor that has to sit against something so the nut can wedge and tighten the sensor in place. it took a looong time for me to find the right fitting that i could use to modify for this purpose haha.

most of that probably didnt make sense, but heres some pictures, thats all you guys are here for anyways! haha :P

                    stock coolant temp sensor

now i just gotta wait till my timing belt kit gets here then i can put in the new rad..! damn this waiting!

oh and another upside to this is that now i dont have to hack up my new samco upper rad hose!

                            small update:

my car now has suspension arms again!

just got back from my trip to vegas, got home and had a few parts waiting for me so i got to work right away putting them in.

                            installed:

                            Nismo rear lower control arms
                            Cusco rear upper control arms
                            Bings rear traction arm
                            AMS front upper control arms

i was gonna get the full SPL multilink rear setup.. but then decided it was much more cost effective to do it this way lol.

my new rims are here now too, but ill keep you guys in suspense on what they are till i actually get them on the car, still waiting on coilovers before i can put my car back down on the ground, should be here this week though!

ill give you a hint though, its 17x7+42, black with a polished lip! so much hawtness, way better than the shitty nismo lmgt1's.

still have a mountain load of parts to install... tired of working out of my carport though lol.. once its rolling ill take it to work and throw it up on the hoist and do it.

engine bay should look significantly better in a few weeks

                              woot! coilovers came in today!

along with a few other parts, picked up C's driving position shift aswell, which is pretty much just a really fancy short shifter lol.. but its probably the coolest one ive ever seen, its adjustable on pretty much every axis, shortens the throw, you can adjust the shifter to lean left or right, forwards or back, and up and down.

bunch of other little parts aswell..

so heres the list that i have to put in now:

                              Tabata radiator and breather tank
Timing belt service, and water pump
                              Billion 65*C thermostat
                              Garage Defend GT cooling panel
                              Tein Monoflex coilovers
                              3" test pipe
                              C's short shifter
                              BNR34 pedals
GTR aluminum dead pedal from a guy on the boards here a long time ago
Cusco carbon fiber front strut bar
                              Tomei Poncams type B
                              Sard racing blow off valve
                              Tomei Reytec standalone ECU

thats it for now, still gotta get a pair of 2860R's, and a bunch of other support bits... i just want to drive my car again so ill do that later, probably over the winter
