  • Zero_wheeler's BNR32!

Recently decided to start documenting more progress on the car. So here it goes. Will make updates as more and more changes happen.

Sorry for the big pictures, I just like them that way :P

I arrived in Okinawa Japan mid February back in 2012 with full intentions of buying a Skyline GTR that I ultimately could take back to my home in the US. After searching for a couple months I found my current car. The 94' R32. Ended up paying an arm and a leg, but I instantly fell in love and had to have the car. I purchased the car from a dealer that in turn had just bought the car from auction in mainland. This was a big sell for me, because Okinawan cars are well known for major rust issues. With around 120k on the clock, the deal was made.

Coming from the DSM community, I had a little bit of knowledge on this era of car. That being said, there is still a pretty steep learning curve.

    Anyways, The car came with a handful of tasteful modifications;

    Super massive greddy boost gauge
    Grex oil filter relocation
    Greddy profec B Boost controller
    Greddy turbo timer
    3.5in Off brand Cat-back exhaust
    HKS Suction kit
17 inch Ray Volk CE28's in some old Dunlops
Nismo/N1 body kit with rear spats (- the trunk spolier)
"Skyline" light up panel between the tail lights

    Wow.
Could have swore that list was alot longer, Guess i've come a bit further than I remember...

After removing the silencer for the JCI inspection, I found an S14 cat delete and made beautiful music..

Shortly after I became comfortable in the car I started doing quite a bit of spirited driving. I also ran in a local Autocross.. This was my first sanctioned event.. ever. Learned a lot about the car and myself that day. First and foremost, The rear diff is shot.. haha

    Jump to like 2:00

I daily drove the car for the next couple months, then handed the keys to a friend for 7 1/2 months while I was deployed.

While I was deployed I did quite a bit of "Online Shopping". Most of it coming from private sellers here on GTRC. I spent somewhere between 5-6 Thousand on parts for new setup. The new build was going to look something like this..

    Power FC D-Jetro w/ dataloggit
    Innovate MTXL Wideband
    Greddy MBC
    Kelford 272/272 Cams w/ Valvesprings
    HKS GT-SS's
    Custom Mafless intake piping
    Deatchwerk 255lph pump
    Deatchwerk 750cc Injectors
    ARP Head studs
    1.2mm HKS Headgasket
    Tomei Timing belt
    Tomei FPR
    Nismo Gmax Clutch
    HKS HYPERMAX II's
    Divided Charge Pipe

Along with a few cosmetic and asthetics..
Cusco catch can, HKS cooling plate, ect..

    I wanted a responsive car.

After everything came in, I then realized the D Jetro PFC I had bought from a seller here, was actually an L Jetro for a 33. Along with some broken studs in the GT-SS's that I wasn't to pleased with, but I called in a favor and made it work. Thanks for those btw guys..

Remember how I said Okinawa cars are notorious for rust? Also that friend I left the car with? Word on the street was he washed the car twice in 7 months, and It showed when I came back. Left with no rust, came back with both rear quarters showing and under the passenger side mirror. I was LIVID to say the least, but happy to see my baby again.

The good luck continued a couple months after my return when I blew the headgasket on a mountain run 2 hours from home. Just my luck? Even though I had most of the parts for my "Build" I was still missing a few components. The ECU for one, and valve springs for the other. After struggling for a month to get around without a car, I bit the bullet and started tearing it apart...

    Then I broke a cam..
Made a pretty noob mistake, Torqued the cams down to the uninstall pattern, went to turn the engine over by hand, and nothing. Started to pull the cam and it came out in two.. 600 bucks down the drain, stock cams it is then..

    Then finally back together..

Fire right up the first time.
Pretty proud of myself, Quite a massive project for someone with little maintenance background. Other than a small vacuum leak and some leaky banjo bolts everything went together really well. The RB26 is surprisingly easy to work on.

The GT-SS's are amazing. If I could only get the wastegates set right, then i'd be set.

Since then the car has gone through a few changes. This weekend I'll post another update!

the pfc ljetro or djetro work for both 32/33 even tho they all say bnr33 on them. they don't work for the 34. great build keep it coming

Yeah I knew it would work, but I still wanted the D-Jetro. It was also fried anyways. Learned my lesson on that one.

            Wiring, Wiring, and more Wiring..

I really wasn't a fan of my Greddy turbo timer and Profec B Boost controller. I've never really owned an EBC, Always stuck to the MBC's for my boost control needs. So I began the tedious project of chasing and deleting wires.

After I cleaned up that mess, I turned my attention to the hood rigged HID's.

As much as I love doing hoodrat stuff with my friends, The wiring had to be consolidated.

At last the wiring I had, was clean, So I turned my attention to the newly obtained goodies.

I picked up a Greddy Infometer at a local Upgarage for MAAD cheap. The 6fold monitor gives me: Speed, RPM, Coolant temp, Timing, and an AFM %. Still unsure how to read the AFM%, but it's there. Plugged right into the diagnostic port above the fuse box, tucked the wiring and boom.

Then as you can see in the picture, My wideband came in! It's a beautiful Innovate MTX-L. I had a good friend weld the bung on the downpipe for a case of beer..

            Then installed and wired up..

Only problem is, the sensor they sent is bad. I've heard they'll replace it, but I ended up going to Guam a couple days after the install and missed my window. Oh well, still looks nice right? Just another thing to add to the list I suppose.

Congrats on the dream buddy! You probably have realized by now if it's not one thing on this car it's another lol.

How did your wideband fit into the vent? Any dremelling needed? Did you just cram it in there or is it mounted onto something?

BTW, what do you do in the military?

If you take the dash apart you can mount it flush. Much more work but certainly worth it in the end. I can give details if interested.

Thanks! Yeahh, Always something on my list..

If you just pop the vent out, you can slide a 52mm gauge in there pretty well. Had to bend the support bracket a little bit wider to fit a slightly larger hole, but it fits nice, snug, and looks almost OEM.

Quite often. We have 3 operational boats and don't have enough to crew 2. I got back from a 3 month deployment in dec, missed a trip last month because I had to take leave and sail again on Monday.
                              I don't suppose you're with AETE?
