  • Tranny grinding in 4th

Most of the tranny's doing that, they grind when you shift to 4th, when you drive hard. Is anything can be done? special rebuild kit with better syncros?

My outside temperature gauge in my 91 Skyline isn't working, it just says -30. I'm suspecting the sensor itself is malfunctioning, not the heating/AC unit. Where is it located? Can I test it? Thanks

Search term = 4th gear crunch

If you find a rebuild kit make sure it's for your year of R32. They changed soem gearbox components fairly early in the model history.

Even new OEM syncros will probably be much much better than yours or mine!

Welcome to my world! I find double clutching and rev matching cures it well even over 7000rpm in 4th. If I try to power shift or even shift normally it will grind pretty bad... I'm in the process of choosing a gearbox replacement. I'd really like the getrag 6spd but that has quite a bit of modding involved. I have a new nismo twin clutch so I'm trying to get a gearbox that uses it so I don't lose out on it.

Thank you guys. Does the tranny fluid is shared with transfer case? or is it sepparate?

            Transfer case takes ATF.

If your box is on the way out anyhow, Redline Shockproof settles the grinding down while it slowly eats your syncros. I think that's not a bad way to extend the life of your box.

RHDJapan has new OEM boxes for around 1900 shipped. I feel your pain, my new transmission is on the way.

Redline ML90 works even better - GL4 approved and cures cold shifting stiffness too. OE approved for Nissan gearboxes, does not eat synchros.

I used AMSOIL transmission fluid and have no issues unless I don't double clutch/rev match 4th gear. I wanted to use redline, but my gearbox needs to live another 15 months longer.

sorry to bring this back from the dead, I have a friend who uses GM syncro mesh in his car and he swears by it and says I should use that, since it wont eat the syncro's away but will still solve the grinding.. has anyone else used GM syncro mesh and had the 4th gear grind solved?

                        the gm synchromesh is garbage.

                        redline heavy shockproof.
                        not mt90 or light shockproof.

If you already have crunching synchro(s) the box is on it's last leg anyways, may as well get the fluid that will make the box feel new again.

I have never had good results with the gm synchromesh and it is costly too.
