  • Tips on changing the transmission?

I'm getting a friend of mine to change the transmission in my gtr. He's a mechanic and has a lift but he never worked on a skyline before.

I already sent him the service manual so he knows what he's getting into but the manual most likely doesn't have tips from people who already did the job.

edit: and I already searched but transmission yield a s*** load of results.

you likely found what i'm going to type but it doesn't hurt.

for the bolts on the top of the transmission just grab a few feet of extensions and drop the transmission off of the mount slowly since the engine will rest against the firewall.

do the starter while the transmission mount is off as well. it will be easy enough to get a 1/4 or 3/8 ratchet in their with a 14mm socket.

Lastly remember the 20 degree turn while you put the transmission back up into the tunnel as it is a little wide.

it's not too tricky. it's big and heavy. The only mistake i made when changing mine was that i forgot to take out the shift lever when it was coming out, i got ahead of myself.

mcfly: thanks! I should've search the posts made by you with the keyword transmission darn sleep deprivation :hit_head:

turismo: yeah I noticed it's big and heavy... It's not like a Honda D or B series tranny

          ...

just make sure to bleed the 4wd system afterwards, and have fun with the upper starter bolt besides that, its pretty straight forward for a mechanic
          Being built...

I think maybe I'll try and put together a DIY when I change my clutch this spring.

that isn't necesary, depending on how you unplug the actuator, you can avoid opening the system, although you do open up the rear of the trasfer case. To me that's the better way.

This is how I did it as well. I do agree, it's the better way. Just be careful not to tear the boot.

Also make sure when you fill it that you fill the transmission AND the transfer case, you can fill the tcase through the shifter if you want - but not the transmission. I found it easy enough to fill them through the proper fill holes. My transmission seemed to take much more fluid than the book says, I think I put nearly 5L into it.

buying a fluid pump is one of the smartest things i've done. You don't use it all that often but it's the best way to do the job hands down. I got an amsoil one.

                      the amsoil one rocks
dont waste your money on the red one you find at cnd tire/part source. if you use it two times with heavy weight oil it starts ooozing at the seals. the hoses will also pop out if you dont hold them.

X2 mine broke on the 2nd use. I now use one of those primative pumps from car quest.

yeah my buddy figured that one. No need to bleed it

he also said the top bolt of the starter is a biatch to get
