  • so i guess i blew up my motor..

    Driving down a road and gave a bit of gas.. heard a pop from the exhaust and i lose all gas pedal response.. idles at around 100-200 and smells a lot like gas in the engine bay. Lots of black smoke coming out of the tail pipe, doesn't go anywhere.

    So cory thinks its a piston and not a head gasket.. i just LOOOVE my car so much (sarcasm).

        black smoke only, no white smoke?

        check all your piping first! also check plugs as well. doesn't really sound like you've blown your engine.

          Black smoke means hella rich... White will mean coolant (head gasket)...

          I don't think its a vacum or boost leak... The amount of Gas smell and smoke isn't right... If it was IC piping, you wouldn't smell ALOT of gas... And the car wouldn't turn on I don't think with a huge boost leak...

          Anyone know of an easy way to test compression without an actual compression tester? That way myself and Geoff and test his cylinders to make sure...

          I guess it'll be some testing before we determine its his engine or not... but that test will take like 30 mins

            same thing happened in my talon... vrooooo BANG!
            idled a little rough, no power (would stall going downhill)
            LOTS of black smoke.
            basically what happens is the air is metered but doesnt make it into the engine, but your fuel system still supplies fuel as if it had, so you run very rich. black smoke = rich. car needs air to run too.
            check your piping, and depending on how much you've run it like this you may have fouled a plug so check them too.

              As background, we hear what we think is wastegate noises too, makes me thinkg the new turbos will fix it.

                diagnosis before replacement, unless you wanna throw money at it unecessarily.

                    more info:

                    I was driving, heard a noise, it wouldnt go anywhere and i had no power. Would not go into + boost. Boost gauge went up and down a lot. Black smoke coming out of the back with a hint of gasoline smell. Engine bay has a bit of gas smell but not too much. Idles at 100-200 and almost stalls a lot. When i rev it will go to 3k (no higher) but it will still sound very rough.

                    Doesn't have a lot of black smoke coming out, but enough to show a problem. I am going to take my break here since I am at work and drive over there and check all the lines to make sure.. hopefully its something as easy as a IC pipe.

                    Thought is correct though, I was having issues with wastegate chatter and maybe those just blew up or something.

                      you're running MAFs huh? Sounds like you just blew an intercooler pipe.

                          I am at work until 10, so an hour more.. but it is being towed to my house right now under supervision from my friend (thanks a bunch Thought!) we are going to try and diagnose it tonight.. I am thinking either wastegates are stuck

                            I could be out to lunch, but if your waste gate was stuck, why would your car go rich? If your waste gate was stuck open, you wouldn't boost much and for sure not get much air therefor little fuel. Let's say your MAF is seeing all this airflow and sends fuel for it but the air doesn't get to the engine, you run rich. That's what i'm getting out of this...
