  • GTR Howl?

So I had to take my GTR home from work last night cuz i blew the pinion bearing in my truck, Now my GTR has a howl, low pitch and quite loud at low speed and as speed increases so does the pitch of the howl becoming almost like a whine? I thought ring and pinion however I checked all the drivetrain fluids and they are all clean and compleately topped up. Any thoughts?

    Thanx.

Throw-out bearing, PS pump pulley, alternator pulley, water pump, OR worse, turbo. If you can get a stethoscope, you can use it to locate the source of the whining noise. At least get a sense of what part of the engine bay the noise is coming from. I hope its not from INSIDE the engine.

I had this happen to me a few years back, and it was a bend turbo shaft that cause the exhaust fins to rub against the exhaust housing. It eventually broke off . Another GTRCer had a similar whiny noise coming from a faulty PS pump, even when it was working fine.

Does the noise increase with revs if you are in neutral and you rev the car? If you want to eliminate some things, disconnect the PS belt form the crank pulley and then rev the engine. If the whine goes away, you have a winner.

Tried most of those things, in thinking driveline related cuz there is no corilation between motor and noise. at a dead stop no noise. Rev car clutch in clutch out no noise. Once moving noise, does not increase or decrease with motor revs or clutch possition, soley due to speed of the car.

The AWD transfer case maybe? Did you try driving the car (listening to the noise) and turn the car off and back on as your driving to disengage the AWD abilities.

i know what this 100% garantee it...

            its absolutley a wheel bearing.

"doesnt make noise when idling, or standing still, no change with RPM... only change with speed".. i promise you its a wheel bearing.

go get the wheel bearings checked out before one locks up on you.

Rear diff, haven't cracked it open yet but thats where the sound is coming from. Anyone got a used rear diff in the edmonton area?

hrmmm you could be correct in that actually, i retract my statement of wheel bearing.

but i would still check the wheel bearings, it couild be that the rear diff is just wear the sound is resonating the most!...

you can check the rear diff without taking it apart... just turn sharply and slow speed and drive in a very sharp circle.. have someone outside check if the wheels rotate, or if the diff locks like it is supposed to.

                      keep us updated

Im Leaning towards diff as when the car was on the ground and therefor under load it was a howl once we dot it on the hoist a spun the rear tires it was more of a clunk clunk clunk sound.

I've seen your GTR in there many times.

Should be able to pick up a used r200 for pretty cheap though, or even upgrade to a 1.5 or 2 way if that is what you might fancy.
