  • Picture of nick in Tomei CrankShaft, any educated ideas.

    I bought a reground Tomei full counter weight crankshaft from Eric @ XS.

    it had been fixed at marine crankshaft in California and was reground,nitrated,balanced and micro polished

    I finialy had a chance to look it over and noticed that a rod journal has a nick in the surface, it has clearly been machined to make it the lowest point with no burrs and is small.

    Should i be concerned?

    If the oiling holes don't cause any bearing damage, I think this should be fine. any educated opinions?

    i think its small enough that you shouldnt worry , but it couldn't hurt to get it balanced to be sure.
    Real Skyline owners have lost at least one to a freakish accident (*- ω -) = #dungive'a

      it was balanced,machined,nitrated and micro-polished

        I wouldn't be too worried about it from my experiences.... but on the other hand my experiences have been with fork lift engines :S

          It's definately not new though it would be nice to know what did that.

              Personally I tnink you're still good. maybe conact tomei if possible. see what they say. or some other manufacturer who makes crankshafts like hks, send them pics say its theirs, see what they say.

                Take the top of your finger nail and rub it on the nic if it scratches your nail the rod bearings won't last long. I was told this by an engine rebuilding teacher in siast (post secondary for teades)

                  years ago i couldnt get a plastigauge to stay put so i licked my finger and stuck it on then left the engine like that for a week. It rusted a fingerprint on the surface that was barely surface rust and I could hardly feel it. It lasted about 20thou before i noticed a significant loss of oil pressure. on tear down at about 50thou the bearing was noticably more worn out on that journal.

                  But that was a ford and not the only questionable thing i did on that rebuild.

                  Id just be worried about spinning a bearing like "kyles_r32" said if it scratches your finer nail it will kill a bearing in no time

                    no way! are you guys crazy... that area should be 100% flawless!
                    considering the potential damage that could cause @ high RPM omg... that would never go near my motor especialy if your investing a ton of money into it. (no worth the risk)
                    the rotating assembly is the most important part of a motor.
                    get it fixed... again.

                        It's hard to tell how big that is however...
                        anytime you have a "nick" in a stressed surface it creates a stress concentration. If it's gonna let go, it'll be there.
                        If it is smooth and can't wear on the bearing it may just add a tiny pocket of oil and not cause any damange to bearings.
                        If all that work was done to it post failure why wouldn't they polish it out? Use an oversized bearing?
                        Maybe look into that as an option. Otherwise if you're like me it'll eat away at your brain and you'll always worry about it.
                        The crank does afterall take a lot of punishment.
                        Get it checked my a reputable machine shop.

                          it was undersized, that's all thy could take off without making it unusable i guess

                            i would say its .5 mm wide and 1mm long
