  • Tensioner stud replacment ideas, bolt replacment etc.

I don't want to have a Tensioner stud failure like i have heard several other people having. My original idea was to have one custom made but it is proving harder then i had thought. any ideas on where to find a better one, have one made or could i just use a high grade bolt instead.

Fastenal says they need a min order of 1000 pcs to custom order.

    Figured:

    I bought a grade12.9 100mm hex bolt from Fastenal, Free. Regularly $1.50

Brought it to a machine shop they machined off the head and threaded the body, 1/2 hr work cost $45.00

end result 12.9 grade tensioner stud. time will tell if it works. fingers crossed.

ARP Will sell direct for special orders and they don't need a 1,000 pc order.

I called them to get ARP2000 Main Bolts (not studs) and I was given the info to the 'Custom/Production Shop' where I spoke with one of the guys there.

You will be pleasantly surprised if/when you call their tech support. They are VERY helpful.

Before this blows up into a "All N1 oil pumps fail all of a sudden", "Rota wheels all over the world explode" or "the tensioner bolt failed several times" (I've only heard of this once thus far), just get a higher grade bolt from a bolt store. You should replace all your exhaust studs, intake studs, wheel nuts, oil pan bolts and what not, just in case... lol.

Seriously though, a good quality high grade bolt from a bolt warehouse should do. Maybe $5?

yea why not man. I haven't done that particular stud but common sense says you can as long as you get a solid bolt and torQue it to spec I don't see why its not gonna work.

wait, what? Are you talking about the idler BOLT or some other stud. Didn't "all those people" you mention shear a tensioner bolt?

I think tensioner stud was replaced on my cars engine (RB20DET) when cambelt was done the second time. It was recommended to fit a new tensioner stud when changing cambelt, bearings, etc.

Grade 8? those aren't much better than oem. Your going to want a 10.9 or even 12.9 if you can find it. I found the head on regular hex bolts are too big to fit with the tensioner. I couldn't get a wrench around it. A strong allen key bolt might work though
Off the top of my head I think the idler bolt is 10mm x 1.5 x 70mm. I have a couple 10.9s for free if anyone wants them

Why not get a few 'Fastener Replacement Kits' together and sell them to the rest of us that are doing builds ?

                          I'll buy.
