  • GTR Rear Diff

well after diagnosing a nasty low whine in my rear end it turns out one of my pinion bearings is on it's way out. question is which would be the one that is more likely to die, the front or the rear pinion bearing?

if i was to change both pinion bearings how hard is it to do? do I need to re-align the pinion bearings with those washers?

    thanks

i'd say the forward bearing, as it would endure much more load
but then again, i haven't taken a GTR rear diff apart, yet

I'm thinking it might be easier if I just find another used r200 and drop it in, or if anyone else has a 1.5 way or 2 way lsd they are selling let me know.

Rear diff is easy providing you have the right tools. I had autodream do mine cause I lack the proper room/tools.

Usually can't rebuild some of the stock diffhead internals, as it's non servicable (at least on GTS it's not). On GTS diffhead you replace the shims that can be bought from Nissan when diffhead starts to wear out. Possibly the input and output shaft bearings as well.

This thread on shimming LSD shows you what's inside a Viscous GTS diffhead -

Gtr might be similar, but from memory is non viscous diffhead (helical?).

1.5 and 2 way are better, as can adjust them as they wearout over time. Also traction is better out of corners, etc.

Checkout the new Nismo diffhead's, as they have carbon plates which reduce diffhead fluid temperature and noise.
