  • 2860R-5 Turbos - Oil Restrictor Required?

    Hey Guys,

I'm finally putting my car back together after a full rebuild. I'm installing new 2860-5 turbos, and have been told by a mechanic that I need to get oil restrictors put into the oil lines since the ball bearing turbos require less oil flow. Any info to confirm would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mike

I Talked to Garrett specifically about this issue. They told me that for stock oil pump R32's that it shouldn't be a problem. If the oil pump volume was significantly higher they did recommend them though.

Some guys simply weld the Banjo Bolt shut, and then drill a small hole and works the same as a restrictor we would normally use.

I was told "If you use stock lines, they already have reducers that are fine. If you replace these with stainless, then you will need reducers."

I have a tomei oilpump and use stock lines. Should I be looking to reduce the lines further?

fwiw, HKS ball bearing turbo kits come with a new banjo bolt that has a restrictor pressed in.

so yes, you'll either get restrictors and stainless lines, or if you want to keep the stock hardlines then you need to track down some banjo bolts that have the restrictors pressed in like the ones in the HKS kits.

i have one spare one here if you want to buy it

Last year I was told it was not needed with stock lines. Since you know already, what size is needed.

Garrett recommends 50 thousands of an inch for a restrictor and Manny runs 35 thou, i am running the ones from Manny and they are good. Make sure to get some if you running good oil pressure or you will blow blue smoke. i speak from experience.

                    restrictor

I ran a greddy oil pump with stock lines and ended up blowing oil past the dynamic seal (big mess) I had other issues but if it was restricted properly then oil would not have pushed by the seal.
The guys at garerett recoment to restrict
easier to do it while everything is off than later. Cleaning out pipes and intercooler sucks !
