  • idle water temperature on hot days

    Hey Guys,

was doing a search and there wasn't any real threads talking about this.. found one on the Australian boards.

guys over there at 40C ambient temp saw water temps as high as 105 at idle (oem stock rad stock fan).

anyways just thought we should start a thread on this as i was wondering what peoples water temps were at idle or on the move and what mods they had?

when i was lining up to get into importexpo this past weekend at idle i hit 103 actually... little scary until i saw the thread over on the aussie boards...

That water temp sounds high. In traffic on a Hot Day the highest I ever hit was about 80oC, and Oil Temp was around 105oC then.

was it on a 40c day? or 30C? you have 2 fans though right and the koyo rad... do you run redline wetter? found another site and said oem water temp should be around 90...

Car was just bought. Light driving in 30C+ back home it was running in past the 1/2 mark on the gauge. I checked the coolant for contaminants, looks clean, but the car was sitting in a warehouse for more than a year so it needs a flush. I'll post when it's gonna be done (eventually), it has to get inspected first so that I can drive it around.

I am in the same boat as pmdawg. I don't have an oil cooler, and have the stock rad and fans. I sit at about 79C almost always, but did briefly see 83C during the high ambient temperatures today. My oil temp ran between 95 and 100C depending on speeds.

well reading up more i think maybe may have air bubbles in mine, gonna bleed out tonight to see if any air comes out as the coolant was recently replaced. side symptom my heater doesn't work which makes me suspect air bubble :P

I'm running a koyo rad with the OEM fan (without a shroud as it doesn't fit with the new rad) and my temperatures are never above 80 in traffic on idle.

Bleed the system properly or install a coolant bleed kit.You can build one your self tho.If you have the skills.
Just make sure the pressure cap is at 16psi or 1.3bar i think......

well had it inclined a bit and had it idle for like a 1/2 hour in the garage and the temp stabilized at 85C... anyways i slapped on the nismo cap and ran for a bit came back and no its idling at 95, well just creeped up to 96?? wtf... gonna wait a bit and see where it tops out at....

but i guess it makes sense... nismo cap locks in the pressure... so pressure builds and if pressure builds (with volume fixed and the amount of coolant fixed) then temp has to go up to compensate right?

I got koyo rad, stock fan without shroud, billion 1.3bar cap and N1 water pump. Water temp on the stupid hot days is around 80-83 degrees. Oil temp around 90 degrees or so. I've got no oil cooler. Water temp is taken from upper rad hose.

big hot days like the past 2 weeks ( 35c + ) on ''cruise mode'' on the highway ( 120kmh 3k rpm) my water temps sit at 87-90c. This is with brand new 3 week old prestone/deionised water/water wetter, racing mishimoto thermostat, stock fan and mishimoto rad.

Higher pressure radiator cap shouldn't be used with stock radiator, cooling system. Use stock radiator cap.

High coolant temps at idle, cruise, etc, can be due to faulty thermostat. Can reach as higher as 95 degrees before thermostat opens.

Engine on my car sits at 82 degrees at idle (constant, regardless of air temp). But ECU tune is not ideal at idle (needs tweeking), so causes the higher than normal coolant temps (factory is 78-80 degrees at idle, which is what my cars engine used to be at).

well i got a koyo rad + n1 water pump FAL fan i switched over to the stock rad cap it lowered the temp a bit, the fan is coming on strong at 83 or so and stays on... its just gettin heat soaked not crazy but definitely cant do any hard driving in its current condition... but already got a replacement stat on the way to see if that solves the issue.

Mine usually sits at 75-80 on normal, highest I've seen was 85 on a REALLY hot day stuck in traffic.

Oil temps are around 90-95, on that same hot day stuck in traffic it reached 102ish (came back down as soon as I got on the highway). Oh and I have an oil cooler.
