  • Rear end noise

I just put my gtr on a hoist, and put it in gear to try and troubleshoot some rear end noises i've been having.. I had thought it was maybe the diff, ie- it was dieing, or was a 2 way racing diff that i didn't know about. It turns out that as i blip the throttle the driveshaft is making some clacking noises either in the center joint, or joint nearest the tranny....

This is where your help comes in! : Does this correspond with feeling some rear end vibration/chatter when starting in first, and then some muffled rear end noise that increases with speed after about 40 km/h? I'd desribe the noise as almost being like a wheel bearing or diff starting go bust, ie-sort of a drone/humm. I'm hoping you'll say this is how it is with a driveshaft going bad so my work is limited! ... thanks for the help

check out your u-joint on the transmission side of the main drive shaft. that would cause clunking when gas is applied and taken off (it could also be your pinion in your diff).

It only sounds clunky/chattery if the car is on a hoist, ie no load on the driveshaft. Once the car is back on the ground, it doesnt present the same way. It starts with a vibration/humm when starting in first, then comes back as a humm over 40 km/h... is this really that type of vibration and humming just from backlash in the diff?? The noises are different when on the hoist vs. on the ground, this is why i'm having a bunch of trouble.

ok, for checking wheel bearings is drive your car on corners. when you are making left turn and noise gets worse your right bearing is not good and try the other way around and find out problem. Main drive shaft, well best way to find out your problem is to take it out and inspect smoothness on joint parts you should be able to figure it out if not send it to drive line shop to balance it, When main drive shaft is gone you can't really drive more than 70 or 80km/h, it is way too much vibration, I had this problem on a few skylines and 300zx, it's very scary to drive at high speed.
          good luck find the problem.
