  • New batch of questions

    Left battery unplugged all night,

    - starts up fine
    - idles fine, possible slight knock?? ( bad gas)
    - idles 20 - 30 minutes, temps are good......then just shuts off???
    - I put car in to diagnostic mode and it is code 11.

    What are the possible causes??
    - to much knock? If that is what it is? Shuts the car off??
    - timing with timing gun reads 15-18? This should be fine.
    - when i try to restart, it just turns over really quick.
    - reset the ECU and I can start the process all over???
    - this is all at idle, no driving or boosting, just idling.
    - it doesn't sputter then quit, just quits??

    Code 11 is caused by a bad CAS or CPS. I'd put my money on a bad CAS...random shut offs (with good timing, spark and fuel) is a common denominator of a failing CAS.

      I will order one tonight. Anything else to try in the mean time?? When i do the CAS check I can hear the fuel pump click, but didn't really hear any injector click??

      Another quick?? If my timing is reading good with a timing light, then the cam marks etc must have been lined up alright?? I didn't do the timing myself. thanks

            R32 Gtr RB26dett idle and rev, bad quality due to bad camera and walk around of vehicle


            Does this car sound alright?? Between 19 and 22 seconds on the video you can hear the "knocking" sound I am hearing in mine. Maybe it is lifters?? Maybe injector noise bouncing??

              Couldn't really hear it, but I'm calling the CAS as well. Don't just try your cas on an other car, because it could work fine on the other one and not on yours :S

                Thanks guys, New CAS has been ordered. I will try GTS-James's CAS to see as well.

                The car won't even start anymore, so I guess it has gone completely. Also now doing the CAS check, the injectors aren't going either.

                  I can only diagnose your car by your write up, only thing that I'm concerned is when you start, it turns over quickly that gives me valve timing is out of wack so you might want to look into valve timing.
                  quick test on CAS is to take the fuel pump fuse and the CAS out then turn the ignition switch on then turn CAS by your hand, if CAS is working you should be hearing injectors clicking.

                      Absolutley NO injector noise when i did this test. CAS must be shot.
                      When I had the car running, the timing read 18 with a timing light?? That should be good enough to start?? If it is reading 18 then all the cam gears and other timing mark should be lined up?

                        ok, ignition timing is 20 digree and you might want to quickly take the front cover and see everything is lined up(cam gears) I've seen RB's cam gears jump on T-belt.

                          With faulty CAS, engine gets harder to start when cold or hot, engine can randomly stall. Another way to check CAS, is use an oscillioscope on CAS plug while engine is running. Usually it's the donut part (electrics) that can be replaced inside CAS, if you can get the locking pin on shaft out that allows it to be removed (need a press). From memory bearings x2 are NTN brand, part number should be on them.

                          Base ignition timing can fluctuate + or -5 degrees or so if timing light is connected to loop of black wire on coilpack loom (near ignition module on back of engine) that goes to coilpack 1 / cylinder 1. What makes this happen is ECU idle stabilisation tables adjusting ignition timing at idle. Some like to run a separate wire to coilpack 1, as to not pickup on ECU adjusting ignition timing.

                          I think a way to stop this is unplugging TPS, which makes ECU not see the idle contact inside TPS and not switch to idle stabilisation tables. But it was done with TPS plugged in on my car when replaced CAS, retimed engine.
