  • Fuel Empty Light is always on :(

Recently changed the bulb in my cluster to LEDs and after the install I find that my the little green light in the Fuel gauge is always on.

Could it be that the LEDs are bright and that it illuminates the Fuel guage light?

Or could be something more serious?

Just put the old filament style bulb back in then you should be back to normal. LED light don't dim so unless you can figure how to keep your tank top 100% of the time or find a dimmable led bulb you have to keep this light old style. The topic was covered before but feel free to search for the answer.

While on this subject, why does the fuel light dim anyways? I though it was just a plain old on/off type when the float reached a certain level.

I could only make an educated guess on this since "school" was some 20 years ago. If the low fuel warning light is connected to the same mechanical "float" level measuring device as the fuel level indicator, and the fuel level gauge is a function of voltage or of variable resistance, ie, say full tank = 0 volt and a empty tank = 10 volt, then as the fuel level decrease the voltage would increase (or resistance decrease) thus creating the dimming effect?
