  • 05U Block

Hey guys, I am just ordering all of my parts in the next few weeks for a small short block build.

I purchased a used block from a guy who got it from another guy last summer. He thinks it lost oil pressure, I was only interested in the block and didn't think much of it.

So I had it machined up last summer:

Machine shop thinks it may have spun a main bearing because one was a little out of round. They cleaned it up with a line hone and said he didn't take anything off the other ones and that it should still be std bearing sizes.

    Decked
Honed w/ torque plate - no taper, 86mm still

It kinda sucks not knowing how it failed, so I'm almost thinking of using another motor I have around, however this one is already machined up

    SO:
Is there anything I should be checking other then what the manual says before putting it all together?

ALSO: I'm assuming I will be ordering std bearings when using a new crank? I know my old crank has color coded bearing selection...

    Thanks guys
    Happy New year!

You should ensure all bearing journals are on the same axis as well as round. If they removed material from one of them, a standard bearing will not fit correctly.
Read up on engine building before you start reassembling! You should measure the parts involved and select bearings based on the measurements. It may start and run for a while with whatever bearings you happen to throw in, but you're asking for trouble if you don't measure.
There are many tips and tricks you can pick up from either reference books or courses designed to enable the average back yard mechanic to rebuild an engine. Internet forums are great for getting car-specific information, but you need to get good at sorting out the BS from the good advice.

Thanks Dan. Ya I was planning on measuring the block up for bearing selection. My main concern is if it did in fact spin a main bearing, and heated the surface, wouldn't that lead to potential problems down the road even if it was all in spec? I searched everywhere for discoloring and couldn't find anything.

Also is there anyone locally that deals with ACL Bearings? I would get off ebay, however I may need a few different sizes of mains.

normally they machine all the journals for several reasons. The one that would concern you most is that you would need to buy 2 sets of bearings :P

lots of places will sell acl's. Not sure about kelowna. Mopac can get them in and ship to you but sometimes the e-bay deals are the best ones. Just make sure your buying from a reputable seller and that the part number is correct. Reference from acl's site.
