  • Quick and east A/C question

Hey everyone, quick question for ya. I'm taking out my rad and engine fan and putting in the Mishimoto rad and fan set, and I was considering pulling the A/C at the same time (I've never used the A/C once in my last 3 cars) My question: when the AC is not on, does it still cause any engine drag just from being another system to pull? I know it's bad when it's being used, but is there still bad drag while the system is off? Thx in advance for the help.

No drag. Only drag or power strain is when the clutch inside the AC compressor is engaged. Engagement forces the pulley from a 0 friction point to xx# friction point which drives the windings to provide power to the pump. So, if you leave the AC compressor in, you'll never have an issue with the clutch engagement unless it seizes. Alternatively, you can remove the fuse from the fuse box which will eliminate the pump from turning on assuming you hit the switch.

I would remove the compressor and all hardware if you plan to remove the condenser anyways. Total weight of the system is in the 40 kg range and is worth doing right. Plus, leaving your compressor unplugged and sitting there will ultimately lead to a good working pump to fail. It will collect dirt and debris, plugging the internals.
