  • Intake Plenum Removal Problems

I'm trying to get at my coolant hoses to fix a leak, and am having a brutal time trying to get the intake plenum off.
Specifically the third bolt on the Air Chamber.
Does anyone have any suggestions on accessing it? I still have all the stock bits on that side of the engine, so unfortunately don't have a ton of room.
    Thanks

this is a job im saving for next winter , i want either the JUN or Nismo plenum for my project , leaning more towards the nismo unit.

I saw a step by step for this somewhere on the net , if i find it ill link it for you !

3rd or rear most bolt on the air chamber is a bugger. I used a 1/4" ratchet with a shallow socket if memory serves. Possibly be able to get it from below with an extension and a universal.
It's a fairly easy job once you've done it a couple of times.

Check posts by mcfly, he can do one in 20 mins/

As for the nismo, it's almost $2000 and not necessary on most builds where you can spend that elsewhere for more power. Lots and lots of 800whp+ GTRs out there with oem manifold. If you have all the other mods done then why not since you have a big budget. Ifyou just want the cool nismo badge you can get one installed, easily and less than $2000. Also, you pretty much need the engine out to get that nismo back in. Trust me. The mechanic had to take a prybar on mine as it was hitting the wheel well before clearing the studs and busted a cv boot when jacking the engine up on one side.

Keep your $2000 and get a better ecu, it'll solve what minor mix issues the oem has. r34 v specs also use oem so they're fine.
        No build thread.

Got it out today, followed the steps here and it worked not too bad.

Also got my torn coolant hose out, it was the one from the oil cooler to the engine, going to change all of the hoses on that side with new silicon ones tomorrow.

the key is patience, I had mine off in less then a hour the first time. You will see there are a few bolts that dont need to go back on when you put it together. It also helps if you have a nice mix of knuckles and extensions for your sockets

I was looking at the nismo intake not for the nsmo badge but for the extra response I can get out of the engine . Im not looking for 800+ HP , it's too much in my opinion for what i want to use the car for , I'm looking for about 500 ish with amazing response. I looked at the Jun , Greddy and nismo one , the nismo although it fixes the lean cylinders also increases the engine response. The Greddy is more for mid to top end power on a very built motor , the Jun requires a single throttle body setup and i'm not going to ditch the ITB setup.

If you want some rubber hoses that will last 20+ years buy Nissan OEM

Silicon ones tend to fail after various heat cycles. But depending on how you drive the car they could last longer.

I use megan racing silicon rad hoses and they are good quality , the cheapo silicon hoses are the ones to avoid .

So should you use OEM water hoses or are the Samco okay to use?

For the rad hoses i use silicon , for under the plenum i would use the nissan rubber set simply because you wont have to worry about them until your another 25% through your own life span

Most of the intake plenum nuts underneath can be accessed from up top using a 12mm s-shaped wrench.
