    Moved to GTR tech.

A straight pipe GTR is loud, but fairly low pitched and throaty. The turbos knock off most of the high frequencies.

You won't lose any hp with a straight pipe but you'll annoy everyone else around you with your ricer exhaust note and you'll pollute quite a bit more. I wear ear plugs when I drive me cause it's too loud. I used to have straight pipes and I annoyed everyone with the loudness. Then my mom got a job, so I have mufflers now.
        No build thread.

remove the cat and get a good flowing exhaust that has a resonator and muffler. this sounds the best and still flows well.

I got mine straight piped, it is not that bad. It drones on the highway at certain rpm, but it is not that bad if you have it exiting the car in the stock tailpipe location. You will be getting yourself attention from the cops with the loudness!! Probably not responsible thing to do to the environment either. I use my gtr mostly for racing (autocross and drags)

well ya this is a temp thing i plan on a blitz nur spec but just dont got the cash atm my buddy had a 4 inch straight and it sounded pretty sick. im gonna start with taking out my cat and leaving my kakimoto exhaust on see how that is and go from there.

hahaa ohh ya i know the cops will b after it cuz i like most didnt have a gtr at first we all had the beater car and i got stuck with a cavi and i through a 2 or 2.5inch straight pipe and cant get any louder then that and sably i got caught haha but the gtr is standard to u can shift and controle the noise a bit better imo i guess ill see. ur right its not the best for the environment but what doesnt hurt it now days?

I have 4" stainless from the turbo back and it sounds awesome. I thought it would be louder (it's still loud)
You won't lose hp going straight pipe. Back pressure is for n/a cars, turbo cars can be open downpipe

                    Spot on^^^

The more flow the better. Aside from looking like an idiot while street driving it. You will not lose power.

Here is what my GTR sounds like straight piped

Here is my 91 GTR testing out my Bee R limiter for the first time. The clutch is gone so no 4wd smoke shows, but you get the picture. Also the car is straigh...

Why dont you just wait till you have the cash instead of paying for mods you are going to toss in a year anyway?

You are correct, a lot of things do hurt the environment these days, so why add one more thing to the list. The cumulative effect of people's actions has a huge effect on the environment.

I say go for what makes you happy.

but exhaust size does have an effect on horsepower and torque.
...On both NA and turbo cars.
most people don't worry about tuning an exhaust system for turbos.
you won't lose peak power by increasing to 4 inch, but you may lose from idle to ~3000rpm.
Most of the time people don't measure that range on the dyno.
small pipes are more efficient at lower flow (low rpm). that said stock exhaust is too small.
for best torque at low rpm without much restriction up to ~600hp (on engine dyno). stock turbo outlet, 60mmX2 into 70mm downpipe, stock or sports cat and 80mm exhaust.
it's also important for a tuned exhaust to have increasing pipe diameter.
                            a) 60(x2) -> 70 -> 80 or b) 70(x2) -> 80 -> 90
b- will have 5-10hp more peak a- will have 5-10 ft/lbs @ 2000rpm... and can increase bost by ~0.1bar to keep it's peak number even with "b"
that junk is just for efficiency.

if sound is important go for it! 4inch!
