  • rb30 vs high deck rb26

    hey guys,

i wanted to throw this idea out there, what are the differences between using a genuine rb30 block, or having the 26 sleeved and tall decked? i know there's a difference of about 18mm between a rb30 and a kaki/hks high deck 26. now to keep the answers simple if i high deck a rb26 block can i use a complete rb30 rotating assembly? if not how much more deck height do i need? also are there decking options that will bring the engine right up to rb30 deck height?

i really would like to go rb30, better rs ratio, more torque, etc etc

2nd option that i have yet too explore is building an rb30 with a 4wd adapter from rips, this seem like it might be cheaper in the end, i'm not too sure though please just throw some opinions around in here until i get the info i'm looking for or someone gets flamed bad

i will keep the thread up to date with my personal findings!

Check out GTRNur from skylines australia. He built a custom high deck motor (HKS is $$$) and it still cost considerably more than just running an RB30. Their are no real advantages. It has been proven many times over in australia that the RB30 block is very capable and is better than an rb26 in 95% of cases.

Also, I hope you are aware that if you go with a RB30 their are other options than RIPs for a 4wd adapter. Everyone seems to assume RIPS is the only one but the design of his kit is pretty basic. Unless your planning on running his billet mains/adapter I would check out the hi octane adapter. It braces the crank girdle and adapters for a 4wd transfer case.

thanks super dude! im not so worried about strength as just the dimensions, proper rod length and deck height, if i do choose to go that route. i'm going to do some more investigation into the straight rb30/26 hybrid setup, and from what i've read already its not a big deal if anything less time, effort, and money than decking and sleeving the block.

also on another note how strong is the 30 block/crank vs the 26?

oh and i plan on using this engine with twin tomei m8260 turbos, can someone suggest an equivalent single turbo thats good for about 650-700whp? i know borg warner has been making waves and their turbos are all i hear about these days. im not opposed to going single i just feel its going to cost more in the end, but if i can spool faster and make the same or more power why not then eh?

R.I.P.S website gives you rough idea of cost's, mods, hp, revs -

The top of the range HKS block (up to 1600-1700awhp in HT GTR dragcar) has 2x extra headstuds between cylinders to stop head from lifting, custom CNC spacer plate at top of block, Darton?? sleeves, custom copper? headgasket (methonal fuel) with I assume is O rings, custom internals (crank, conrods, pistons) for 2.8? litre. Runs a custom dry sump setup.

i know this thing was insane but its terribly hard to find info on, and i think now a days there have been quicker cars with less power no?

i was referring to the kakimoto hi deck kit which comes with the sleeves and a spacer to fit between the block n head, its around 2k plus the machining to put it in so im definitely looking to go straight rb30

nothings set in stone but i'm going to talk to endyn about cnc headwork, and use their billet pistons , spool rods, etc. i still need to focus my power goals to know exactly how the head will need to be ported, i'm reading lots on motors and engine building in general to make the best decision possible.

anyone have any experience with the tomei m8260, or can recommend the fastest spooling single equivalent?
also anyone else on this forum have an rb30 car?
