  • New owner R32 Need help 4WD light ON Already searched

    Greetings from USA.

I recently took ownership of this R32 GTR. I don't know much about this car since there are not many here. The 4wd light stays on but the ABS and Hicas goes off normally after engine start.

After some search here is what I have done:
Checked under hood and dash fuses all good
Checked the LED error and flashing code 21.
Checked the TPS(I see last owner installed a new unit)
Checked the TPS voltage using a scanner and shows .4v throttle closed.
Checked the fluid level in trunk. (right between min and max)
Turned the ignition on but only heard fuel pump sound. I don't hear the 4wd pump going or the fluid moving or going down.
I printed out R32 manual and followed diag for code 21. Measured voltage at 4WD ECU pin 47 and 48. Found .4V at connector. Flow charts says to replaced 4WD ECU. Makes sense since the voltage signal is getting to the 4WD ECU but the ecu still flashes this problem then ECU defective.
I replaced the ECU and still same code 21 and 4wd light on.
Well what now?? I am thinking to jump the plug and see if the 4wd pumps works or run two new wires from ECU to 4WD ECU for the TPS signal?

    Any ideas?? thanks.

I would adjust the TPS a bit before replacing parts like the ECU. Also check the connection on the Atessa controller (there's only 1 ecu and it's for the engine). What kind of engine ECU?

I also tried different setting for the tps. 5v, 3.5v, 4v. 4.5v. Still the same.
I have not open the kick panel to see if the ECU has been changed but I read the tps voltage from scanner connector and that should be what the ECU is seeing also so engine wiring harness to ECU should be good.

        Check your brake fluid.

See if the 2 wires are still connected to the top of the power steering cap! If one or both are broke it will turn the warning light on!

aww crap, did you see that!

Let me check the brake fluid and PS cap wiring then. I was going by code 21 but let me check all possibility.

I found a bleeding switch made by last owners behind the driver's kick panel. I played with it and was able to hear the pump running and torque gauge going up to half mark. The 4WD light is still on and code 21 still there.
I opened up the 4wd controller and jumped two wires to the 47 and 48 pins and wired them directly to the harness to test if there is any problem with the connector. The result is still same 4wd light and code 21.
I am going to run two wires from ecu to 4wd controller for pin 47 and 48 to to see if anything changes.
I have two 4wd controller showing the same thing but I already checked many things and it maybe I have two bad controller here..

I am thinking if anybody can help me test one of the controller... I will ship one controller to you and if it works for you with no light then I can going on to dig some more.

Also check the fluid level in ps Rez as I just had this same problem. It was hardly even low and it caused the 4wd light to come on! Try it and see could be a super easy fix like mine!!!!! Best of luck.

try checking your hicas. there is a self diagnostic mode that you can activate by doing a series of nintendo code sequences. that link has the steps

                    The link does not work??

I am still working on this problem?? I have replaced the ECU with Power FC. Still no 4WD yet.

                      Procedure:

Switch ignition off, transmission in neutral or auto in Park.
                      Start engine
Very quickly (with a couple of seconds), turn the steering wheel left and right about 20 degrees from centre five times, and then pump the brakes five times, then press the brake pedal once more this will enter diagnostic mode.
Drive forwards or backwards about 5 metres at a speed less than 10km/hr, this will enter full diagnostic mode.
The HICAS light in the instrument cluster will be flashing quickly (for normal) or will flash a code indicating any problems.
Long flash = first digit, short flash = second digit.
Diagnostics will return to normal after five minutes, or any speed over 10km/hr, or ignition is turned off.
dont forget to honk the horn twice haha gl with your problem
understeer -is when you go off the road and see the tree that kills you
oversteer-is when you go off the road backwards and dont see the tree that kills you

The ps cables shouldnt have anything to do with the 4wd for the record!

Finally the 4WD light went out today and torque gauge is working too. It turned out to be the wiring between the ecu and 4wd ecu. Ran new wires and it's ok now.
