  • How much would a spun rod cost me?

I'm thinking of buying a project car as my first car, would it be worth it? from what I've heard it has a spun bearing, or there is a knock when it pulls, and it is missing the transmission, front brakes intake and exhaust system, so if i were to buy the shell (3000ish) how much would it cost me for the parts and assuming that I do all the work. thanks!

EDIT: sorry if this has been asked before I forgot to search

Depends on how much of a build you're going for

the basic OEM refresh assuming your block is okay and you just need to address the spun bearing you will be looking at

    clean up the crank ~150
    bore/deck block ~ 90+75
    new rings ~150
    oversized ACL Bearings ~160
    OEM gasket kit ~ 180
    crank collar+machine ~ 180
    oil pump ~ 210

    Total of ~1100

Plus transmission, brakes intake and exhaust, if you are cost effective should come to ~1000

with another ~500-600 for small stuff like clutch, coilpacks, injectors spark plugs, engine oil trans oil ect

    so grand total of ~2800

If you start looking into forged internals and all the other goodies then its a completely different story

Yeah just a basic oem re-fresh I wanna warm my self up by doing this as my sisters birthday present (kind of sad i know, buying a broken car and fixing it up but moneys tight) before I get onto the big leagues (hopefully my car!) could you point me in the direction of the parts? and thanks a lot!

My first build was almost exactly the same as the situation you described but rather than spun bearing it was a blown 6th piston.

I was luckily able to get mine up and running with a refreshed motor for only $5500

As for where to start, I'd say ebay has some good deals on ACL bearings head gasket kits, and if you really want to be cost effective, you can use the OEM oil pump rather than the N1 which is ~50-60 difference, and in your application

piston rings you can get from raw brokerage

exhaust i've seen used Nismo's go for as low as $250, intake ~100 and transmission should not be over $300

definately doable within $2500 but just a heads up, be prepared for things to go wrong

PS. it really depends on the machine shop you go to, those prices is from my local shop so there may be discrepancy there,

also, im not taking into account things like water pump, thermostat, timing belt/tensioners, some are reusable some are not

yeah I figured the prices varied but I wanted some as a benchmark as a way to pitch the story to my parents, as it's really their decision (I'm 15 lol). I'm obviously going to work for most of the money but I want them to know before I do anything stupid lol and thanks again

You have to take in account block assembly cost, resurfacing the head and other misc items. It adds up real quick. Not to be an asshole but I was 15 when I got my gtr and I sold it when I was 21,if you own a gtr make sure you have a decent job with some good income. Its one of the most expensive imports to play around with (exlcuding exotics). You should start off with something a little more simple and cheaper like a 240sx.I say don't do it.

I and understand what you're saying but in all honesty I've had my mind set on a gtr since I was about 8, I bother my friends constantly about it, and I think (like every one else) that I'll be the exception to the rule. This just might be one of those mistakes I have to make in order to grow up (maturity wise). You said that you sold it when you were 21, and I'm guessing that means you had some great times in it , and even if you didn't it was still memorable enough for you to tell me about it, right? anyways thanks for the input!

I've always dreamed about owning a 993 turbo , I probably could of with the amount of money I put in gtr but I never did.Trust me buddy you're in over your head with this.Especially with the limited insurance companies out there willing to insure these cars + the rediculous pricesm, I would tripple think this.

Im actually much happier now without the car.Spending most of your income on a car = you hold back from doing whatever you want with your friends cause the car is tying you down.

I guess but damn, man I just really want one you know? and the problem with a 240sx is that it's not awd that's what really sold the gtr to me, other than the awesome body styling

Hey it's up to you buddy but remember what I told you.I know two guys that are looking to buy rhd cars and with their clean records the insurance companies are quoting them 700-900$ a month...I dont care how good the car is ,that's just rediculous.

DJ is spot on with his advice, once you dig into it you can quickly get in over your head. With all the choice people who buy skylines for summer cars then realise then can't drive them in the winter or afford to fix so they sell them for super cheap it has destroyed the resale value. What I'm getting at is if this the car you want then one that is complete and running with a rebuilt engine it will be much cheaper trust us.

If you decide to take on this project then take all your quotes for everything and add them up, then triple it,then add another few thousand $$ for bits and pieces. Like most of us "while I'm here" syndrome strikes hard and fast !!!
