Some early aftermarket camgears have been known to shred cambelt, damage engine -

Not sure about the lastest camgears, but hear they are ok.
Better to modify stock camgears, as they should last the life of engine -
Teeth on stock camgears are designed to be used with stock or correct aftermarket cambelt (teeth) and last longer. You'll find out that the teeth are different on some cambelts (at least from my experience they were when tried an aftermarket factory type cambelt vs stock cambelt).RESPONSE MONSTER

It's not my cars engine. From what I understand, camshaft specialist can make those adjustable stock camgears for I think was a couple of hundred (depends on who you get to do it, shipping, etc). As far as I know it's an old idea, just some do it because it's more reliable when used on a racecar.
To set them up you use a degree kit -
http://www.camshaftshop.co.nz/index.php/Camshaft-Information/sole-purpose-of-degreeing-your-cam.htmlNeed to optimize & tune your engine to gain maximum horsepower and torque. Unlock serious RPM potential with high performance Kelford Cams.
From what I've seen, some degree kits have degree wheels on front of camgears / camshaft's which help to set them up. You can etch degree marks into them and some do.
The teeth on aftermarket stock type cambelt were a different shape to stock cambelt teeth, yet cambelt was for that engine. Didn't seem to work properly, as from memory it made a noise. But if cambelt teeth are wrong (like mentioned in link with the aftermarket camgears), could move around and damage camgears. Just something to note when looking at buying cambelts to avoid those types of problems.
I gather if you buy certain brand camgears, it's best to buy one of their cambelts to suit.RESPONSE MONSTER
