  • Simple Engine Support Question

Just about to begin unbolting my bell housing but noticed I will need to support the rear of the engine, looked for hooks or bolts or holes in the cast block but am finding nothing, hoping to find a quick reply for a solid way of supporting my Rb.

PS Didn't use the majic search button, going to work on the starter while I wait for reply.
    LOL time is money

    Thanks

So 15 min later the starter was out, this is where a 14mm stubby ratchet wrench would be nice, If your using your hands after the top bolt is broke free, keep the Bottom bolt in as to keep pressure off the threads of the top bolt and if you have small hands Like me you should be able to have that bolt out faster than it took to type this out, Still waiting on a reply to the engine Support. If I don't hear from someone I will find a way but I have no one helping today so looking for an internet hand,

    Thanks

Wow The right tool for the right job goes a long way. 10 min later and the top two bell houseing bolts are out and thanks goes to SnapOn ProWobble extension.

Bottle jack and a piece of 2x6 under the oil pan has always worked for me when dropping trannies.

That seems like a solid idea, never considered it.
          Thank you

When I have the oil pan supported it does not relieve much of the pressures from the rear of engine. When I look at where I would need to support the oil pan it would be near either the bell housing or where the steering rack or sub frame is. When using your bottle jack method are you supporting the larger square lower portion of the oil pan? I will see what I can come up with. Is there normally a good amount of force required to pull the transmission back. I read that the fork doesn't need to be removed, perhaps this is where I am expierencing the tension?

Usually as far back as possible is best. I've done mostly auto's and manuals in domestic cars and trucks and haven't touched my GTR yet so don't know squat what to expect.

So my tension was from a final bolt I just didn't see and transmission is out and clutch was in deed worn out. Looks to be stock and car is running at 320 wheel hp so it is to be expected.

What exactly is the engine supported by, the block under the oil pan really isn't doing much.
Is the back of the engine supported by oil pan resting on the sub frame
I leave it resting on what ever it is holding it now but would like to know if anyone else supports the rear of the engine for future transmission work.

Would an engine stand be used with the rear support hooks or is it 100 % fine to leave the back of the engine unsupported.

                Thanks

Take the whole thing out next time, engine+tranny, this was a MAJOR design consideration for the GTRs and it is so much easier.
