  • Cold start sling shot symptom?

Anyone else have this feeling when you start the engine from cold and start driving, not even driving hard just normal everyday driving? What it does is I start to drive and it's like there's no power and it's a slug but then once it hits like 3200rpm it's like a sling shot.

I'm not getting in the car and stomping on the gas when the engine is cold, just normal driving. Once the temp gauge starts to move it's fine. It's like it's going through steps and once it hit's 3200rpm it starts flying only becaue I'm pushing on the gas probably a little harder and only because it feels like I'm pulling a trailer and then all of the sudden I'm cruising. I read that this is normal when the engine is cold but I don't think so. I don't think nissan whould produce a car that you couldn't pull out into moderate traffic without almost getting rear ended because it runs like a slug until the temp is up.

That's normal, stock ECU will use a warmup ignition table (pulls ignition timing to match engine running rich) until certain coolant temp is reached (when engine is running leaner). If you rev over 3200rpm or engine goes onto boost (ECU looks at MAF / load on engine), stock ECU ignores this warmup ignition table, etc. All of these settings are adjustable, so can be changed. Also I believe this helps to protect engine during warmup.

BMW developed a redline on dash and ECU program to suit that makes the redline disappears in 1000rpm blocks and allows engine to be reved 1000rpm more as engine warms up. I think some aftermarket ECU's now have this feature.

Why BMW do this, is when oil is cold it's thick and fails to reach bearings at higher rpm (causes bearing failure), hence why you don't thrash or rev a engine when cold. I always warm engine up on the spot before driving (use 10 minute feature on turbo timer), just like is done with GTR racecars or any boosted engine.

hahaha it does the same thing for me..... exact same. like its holding back till the thermostat opens. i agree with the safety aspect too, the turbos are under extra load while thats happening too. i always try to warm it up so i can jump in and get to op temp before i get out of the subdivision.

What I mean by protect engine, is if you have cold coolant, hot cylinders / block = cracked block. I believe running engine rich, pulling ignition timing to match keeps cylinder temps low enough for this not to happen (but I think raises exhaust temps). You'll notice the cooler the coolant is, the richer ECU runs engine to match.

Yea, warn up your engine before boosting. Sounds like your slingshot is just finally hitting boost at 3000rpm
Dang! You got shocks, pegs... Lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?

Ok cool so it is normal, I never just jump in the car or any car turbo or not and just rev it through the gears cold. I just have to wait a little longer before I head to work. I didn't really notice it before until I moved, no I live on a slight hill and have to give it a little more gas to start climbing it. Everytime I start to go there's always someone that pulls out and is on my ass going up this hill, that's when I noticed the sling shot at 3200rpm in 2nd and 3rd gear.
