  • Stalling and hesitation issues

Hey guys, I've been having random stalling issues with my gtr for awhile now so I figured I may as well post about it. The problem is very inconsistent, unpredictable, and varies in its severity.

The common symptom will be that if I'm in neutral, the idle will drop for a second, then go back and forth a few times. Other times it is more severe and the car will stall. It also happens under acceleration/cruising, where I will lose some, or all power for different periods of time.

From what I've read it sounds like its a MAF problem. I checked the ECU diagnostics and it gave me code 12, which is for the MAF sensors. The first thing I did was clean them with MAF cleaner, and resoldered the internal connections. Afterwards it ran fine for a couple hours, I thought I had fixed the problem, but to my frustration it started acting up again. I checked the diagnostics again and it gave me code 55.....which is supposed to mean that everything checks out, but it clearly isn't running properly. Then I bought new MAFs and installed them. Again, it ran fine for a long enough period of time that I thought the problem was fixed, but no dice.

When I had it out the other day it did its usual symptoms: ran fine for the first half hour or so of driving, then started to act up. I would think that it's something heat related but the last time I started it up, it had been sitting for 8+ hours and stalled right off the bat. On my last drive it went into limp mode for the first time (wouldn't rev above 2500ish rpm), so I pulled over to give it a rest, reset the ecu, and then it ran better (but not perfect).

Anyway sorry to ramble on here, I'm just looking for some advice on what I should do next. It could be plugs, coils, or cas from what I've read, but the code from the ECU has me thinking its the MAFS, I just don't know what to do next.

Try your o2 sensor. Replace that.

Could be your ignitor! Can you borrow one?

Rev limiter at 2500rpm = MAF. Check wiring to MAF plug (if someone in the past pulled on MAF wiring, could have pulled wires out of plug and vibration could set it off) and check wires into ECU plug (same problem) and check that ECU plug is seated correctly into ECU and is not warped. Also check wiring to MAF's from ECU.

CAS (would have error code on ECU) and engine gets harder to start when cold or hot. TPS (error code on ECU, but sometimes is faulty and has no error code on ECU) can cause stalling, hesitation if faulty or not set on idle contact. Ignition module can make engine stall after 10 minutes or so of driving, but usually engine can't be restarted until ignition module cools down. Fuelpump is another when it's about to fail.

Skym posted in a thread from last year when gtrjon and I were having similar issues... read through this page... there is also a video of my car in limp mode... I still have not found this problem... it doesnt happen anywhere near as often as it used to so its not high on my priority list anymore lol

Thanks guys. Yeah that video looks pretty similar to the symptoms I'm having. Today I checked the wiring for the mafs and ecu. The plug going to the ecu did seem a bit loose so I made sure it was tightly fitted. I'll get a day permit sometime this week and see if that makes any difference.

I know it's a pain in the ass but also check for vacuum leaks. Especially if your running the original factory hoses. You'd be amazed at the havoc a cracked vacuum line will cause.

The intake manifold to head gasket is a common failure area on GTS, GTR. Checking this with wideband should help to find that problem (engine runs lean). Most fit metal intake gasket's on GTR to solve this problem.

Ask someone with Nistune tuning software, etc to datalog sensors (MAF, o2 senors, etc) while driving.

Stalling with MAF can be due to MAF making ECU select a too rich cell on fuel map. When datalog MAF, etc, can playback and it shows which cell ECU selects on fuelmap, etc (would have to download maps from ECU before doing this). So it should be obvious at what is causing problems via playing the run back on laptop to see what happens when engine stalls, etc.
