  • rb26 timing??

I have a clamp style timing lamp and the rb26 manual uses a special port or the ecu to time the engine. Just wondering if anyone has done it another way. I was thinking using an old spark plug wire, sticking one end in the #1 coil pack and the other on the spark plug and using my timing light that way. Just looking for some input on other possible ways, if any.

Do it exactly how you described, my tuner told me that's the best and only way he checks the timing.

This is now the way I check the timing too. Flawless

      +1.
If you don't have a spark plug wire you can get a good signal by putting the pickup around the 'live' wire leading to the coil and push it up against #1 coil.

That spark plug wire (HT lead) way is mentioned in this ECU manual on page 10 -

If clamp timing light onto little loop of black wire off coilpack loom, timing light is picking up ECU + ignition module sending signal through that wire to adjust ignition timing on cylinder 1 coilpack (around + or - 5degrees). It's the idle stabilisation on stock ECU doing that.
