  • Bellhousing Leaking A little...Question

    1990 Nissan Skyline GTR R32 RB26DETT

so.. i had my car on jack stands the other day and noticed theres a little oil leaking from the bellhousing.

Previous owner used 10w40 (last year) when i did a oil change i used 10w30, I need to do a oil change soon and was thinking of using a bottle of lucas stop leak stuff with 10w40. and hopefully stop or slow down the leak.

Anyone have any ideas or, Is lucas oil ok? or possible have any other ideas?

    Thanks
    Nick

if its coming from between the engine block and transmission then its most likely your rear main seal. Other possibilities could be your transmission input shaft seal, or what quite regularly happens is people mistake a leak at the bottom of the car for a leak that is actually from the rear of the valve covers ontop of the transmission housing. If your certain it is from the rear main seal, i would take the time and fix it. If it builds up enough you will have oil coating your flywheel/clutch and you'll destroy that before you know it. Its a pain to drop the tranny for a $20 seal, but in the long run its the best option.

I've used a number of stop leak products on my beater cars, some work some dont. I find they either work or dont right off the bat and if the do they only last for a limited time before the problem comes back and usually worse lol.

      Thanks,

Im 90% sure its the rear main seal, now to replace it I'm assuming i need to drop the tranny, now can i unbolt it on the one end, lower it with a jack, replace the seal and bolt it back up and I'm good to go? I'm not a mechanic but I'm not a idiot either, i usually do most of my cars maintenance and what not..

would lucas oil stabilizer be ok in the rb26? if it stops leaking I'm happy, if not then i have no choice but to replace the seal.. just is lucas ok in a GTR?

      Thanks again

dont know the exact specs of the lucas oil product but if its ok in other engines, its ok in an rb. They are, afterall, all internal combustion engines lol. Might as well try the stop leak before you go undertake the seal.

For the rear main seal your best bet is to unbolt both driveshafts, buy yourself a transmission adaptor for a rolling floor jack and then unbolt the transmission and slide it back enough to get at the seal. You will need a seal remover tool and an installer tool as they are sometimes a pain to get out and you dont want to ruin the new one going in. Replace that and bolt it all back up. Realistically your hardest task is getting all the transmission bolts out and getting the transmission out and back in all lined up. By no means is it a hard task but it may seam a little daunting for a first timer.

This might sound crazy but you may very well NOT have a bad rear main seal and I'd highly recommend investigating further.
I had the same symptoms and after replacing my rear seal the problem pursieted. It turned out to be my valve cover gaskets.
Valve cover gaskets a more likely to leak than a rear main seal on such a low mileage car.

alright, one of these days ill go and look more in depth and see what i can find. My car has approx 80km on the R33 motor, but the tranny is original. I had valve cover off before to paint it. and it seemed fine with i put it back together, Ill look more into it and see what i can find!

Also, my transfer case is leaking a little still as well. I thought i fixed it but apparently not. I know it calls for ATF Dexron 3 fluid, any one know of that lucas tranny oil stop leak stuff is ok in the transfer case?

            Thanks again for eveyones input!

Yeah, I was 90% it was my main seal too, ended up being the oil return for turbo

I've used Lucas in RB trannys before with good results. Not sure about the xfer case tho, should be fine. As for the leak, like mentioned above check ur head etc. for leaks first. Rear main seal is a bitch if you don't have an impact gun to remove the flywheel bolts.

The flywheel bolts shouldn't be that bad if you go a good wrench and someone holding the crank pin with a ratchet in the front. If you really think its the rear main seal but aren't 100% you can always unbolt the bell housing bolts a bit and slide the tranny back a crack to see if more oil comes out from inside. I've seen it done once but if your that far might as well take it out

If you have oil around your transfercase, check your gearstick boot, They leak most of the times.
