I'd change the timing belt, tensioner and idler along with the water pump. It's cheap enough that if you didn't do it, and something fell apart again causing internal engine damage, you will be kicking yourself.

Daryl, I always thought that you have to take the crank pulley off in order to do the timing belt change.
BTW, I need pricing on a water pump, along with timing belt, idler and tensioner. Can you pls help, Daryl? I can swing by RightDrive and pick up the items soon if you have them in stock.(O||O___SKYLINE___O||O)

I am going to avoid changing the timing belt, because it was done not too long ago. But if I see red dust, then it is getting replaced. One question though.....assuming I dont need to CHANGE the timing belt, what all do I need to remove/loosen in order to replace the water pump? Can I just loosen the belt, remove it from the cam gears, let it hang while I replace the water pump and then put it back on? If yes, what do I need to make sure, in order to keep the timing correct?
I will do my best to not rotate the crank pulley, or the cam gears at all. But if I do end up moving it, I guess I will have to set cylinder 1 to TDC? Now which stroke should it be at TDC for when I put the belt on - Compression (2) or exhaust (4)? Or could it be either, as long as cylinder 1 is at TDC?
Does anyone know if the bolts that hold the water pump in place are accessible while the idler and tensioner are still in place?(O||O___SKYLINE___O||O)

you will have to remove the tensioner and idler pulley for the timing belt, as for resetting your timing...i didnt really worry about top dead center, i just made sure the mark on each cam gear was lined up with the mark on the backing plate and same with the marks on the crank pulley1991 skyline GTS-T - first import/winter project

Take it to a SHOP! if you think red dust has anything to do with a timing belt, then seriously find the closest shop to you that knows skylines and take the car there.
edit ** as far as i know or have ever read.. red dust is from coil packs going or screwing up.... nothing to do with a timing belt.
If this is wrong somebody please correct me

danwit wether he wants to change the timing belt or not it still needs to come off to change the pump because the idler and tensioner bearings are in the way of 2 of the water pump bolts (as i believe i already stated earlier in the thread), and as for setting the cam gears i just stated how i did it as i forgot to set it to top dead center i just made sure to line up all marks when setting timing starting with crank pulley1991 skyline GTS-T - first import/winter project
