  • Need Advice! D.Shaft boot job casualty! :(

    Hello!

Just want to share and ask you guys on my situation.

Me and my trusty old mechanic is doing the inner drive shaft boot this Sunday afternoon... everything was ok on the first part but upon removal of the right drive shaft... I noticed while they're trying sooo hard to get the drive shaft out, this certain rubber hose connected on the back side of the rotor area to the fender is being stretched too much and alas!! I see wires! I told them hey be careful it's some sort of harness! When we got to check the terminal of w/c, the wires has been detached to it!

Upon closer examination my mechanic said it's an ABS speed sensor. wtf... We have continued to do the drive shaft and he tried to fix and put the terminal back. With the car still jacked up w/o wheels I started the car and... 4WD and ABS lights were on! Deym. Is this some kind of sensor error since there is no wheels and the car is jacked up? Or it is because of the ABS speed sensor is really screwed?

How about d.i.y gurus out there, when doing these boots do you need to remove the ABS speed sensor? What did my mechanic do wrong? I'm stumped. And we're going to do the right side inner next... He even told me to test drive it when were done maybe the lights come on because it has no wheels and is still jacked up. Oh man... and I've learned that these abs sensors costs an arm and a leg!

One sad Sunday afternoon indeed. I guess that is the universal split boot is invented. Any inputs will be greatly appreciated.

i have to do mine too this week,

you don't need to removed any speed sensor (ABS sensor), you simply detach the lower outer balljoint, remove the axle nut and slide out the axle front the hub, then undo it from the diff,

on one side, its simply bolted to the diff, but on the other side the end of the axle is splined and goes into the diff, meaning when you remove it you spill the diff oil

and the ABS light is in fact lit up because the sensor is broken, thats the only reason

I just had my inner boots on both sides replaced, I was going to try it myself then I heard that the circlip can slip off the axle and fall in the diff. Definitely don't have to unhook any sensors for this job. Hope everything works out alright for you.

        Thanks for the reply guys!!

I see that the calipers are still attached I don't know if they undo the lower ball joints. Because they keep on jerking it out (drive shaft), the other guy is on top pushing the hub / rotor down while the other is trying to remove the shaft. While trying to push the rotors down that is the time I see the hyper extended abs sensors.

@ R33-East. Thanks for the tip about the circlip.

What side mate will the differential oil spill? Left side? So it is a pre-requisite that you need to change the gear oil as well when doing it? Maybe you sir have some D.I.Y guide to it?

Left side? From where? Lol. It's the drivers side that goes into the diff, passenger side just bolts up

Chances of that clip falling off Ito the diff is slim, even if it does just pull the cover off and get it out, new fluid while your in there. Did you get the axel out? I took my whole hub off to change mine, but it was snapped off, Too short to pull on so I had to remove the front cover to get a screwdriver in there to pop it out.seems wierd to take out the bottom ball joint, would have to lift the rotor above and pull it out, and u said they were pushing down? Should be able to find a used sensor, probably 30 bucks, I think I might have a couple kickin around, I see says your in manilla, that right? Should be easy to find a used one over there no?

Your abs and all wheel drive system relies on those speed sensors. It's a little magnet that counts how fast Each wheel is turning. But the wheels definately don't need to be on the car. The sensor is part of the hub assembly. See if you can just splice the wires or resolder the plug

About the "what side", mine is LHD converted that's why. Yes they're pushing the rotor part like there's no tomorrow to get the axle out thus extending the harness and snap! I'm from Manila, and GT-R parts here is a rarity so is the knowledge. Have to get it from some sources outside of the country.

When they removed the right side drive shaft, I noticed gear oil dripped just a little bit. Don't know about the left side.

Thanks sir. I'd like the idea of solder but the point where it snapped is just right after the plug itself. And the plug is like a solid plastic which can't be opened.

Lhd? Nice, so ya, the right( when sitting in the car), would be the side oil will come out, the diff only gets filled About half way, or maybe just over, but not too much will spill out, might want to top it up though,

Yes sir LHD. Oh ok. That's the Front Differential Oil right? Oh you've mentioned you have a spare ABS speed sensor?

you will need to remove the terminal from the connector to resolder a new wire on it. there are terminal remover tools or you can carefully use a pick in some cases. Make sure you save the rubber weather plug for the new wire and dont damage it. Look up a tutorial on how to remove terminals from a connector housing and you will see its simple.

Well thank God my mechanic was able to solder it properly. He was able remove the top housing to give access to the wires. And now I know what they did wrong, they did not remove the necessary parts for easy access of the shaft. They tried to do the shortcut way since he thought I wouldn't want the calipers removed. I just said of course if we are going to damage other parts why shouldn't I allow it. Anyways, at least I have learned my lesson. I think so is my mechanic.
