  • Vacuum with and without drop-in cams on an RB26?

So I picked up a replacement motor recently for the R33. The R32 motorset came with what looks like Stage 1 Mines upgrades (ECU label, NISMO timing belt, replaced waterpump, replaced vacuum hoses). The motor overall was very clean. Had a wet compression test done before I bought it and they came back with a video of 180 accross the board.

I put everything together, and am currently running through the motor on the stock R33 ecu to make sure everything checks out first. So far everything sounds great. Motor fires up without any hesitation. Revs freely and does not sputter after a high free-rev. Idle is approx 980 - 1000. My concern is I checked the vacuum on my boost gauge and at idle it reads -300 mmHG? I'm assuming the RB26 is like any other motor, and stock should be around -500 mmHG (-20 psi)?

I've had cams in other turbo cars before and have seen a loss of vacuum, but this is my first RB26 so I want some feedback (on top of my searches) of what other users see if possible. In my past experience, vacuum like -300 would mean a pretty bad leak and would show in the idle, or the engine has been cammed. It would be a pleasant surprise if this in fact a complete Stage 1 engine, with the Mines Shore Pro cams, but I'm not sure how I could identify them since they might not be hard marked on the shaft itself, like the TOMEI or HKS offerings. Is there any other way of verifying modified cams besides taking off the valve covers? Any feedback is appreciated.

    Thanks all.

Thanks for that MikeyRHD. How does your idle sound on B's? Is it noticably different than stock? All I have to compare is my past experience using drop-in Comp cams in a DSM, which they had setup so that the idle sounded stock.

umm it was almost a year since I last had my car running so I'm trying to remember to say what the difference is, but I can say that the poncam b idles very well, there is maybe a slight lope to the idle now but it's not a radical change
