  • turbo swap on rb26

    Hey,

I've done a lil search but couldn't find anything precise... Can I swap turbos/manifolds with the engine still in the bay from under the car? Will I have to take the crossmember off? Is it a pain in the ass?

    thank you very much!

I was able to do all from above the car took a long long time. Lots of cuts on hands and forearms and sore back from stretching into the bay. Had to buy a few box end pivoting wrenches from hardware store.

      Good luck.

I replaced exhaust studs/exhaust gasket while engine was still in, it was a pain in the ass. Mine is only an rb20 though

This. Did my own as well, same comments. Most of the work will be from above, you will nedd to get under it to get at downpipes, oil returns and support brackets.

lol they are making out to sound it extremely hard... its not hard, its just time consuming... it all do-able, its just how much patience and time you have on your hands.

It's doable but a real pain, few extensions and swivel sockets, took me about 8 hrs just to get them off, have to loosen the turbos and let them drop a bit so you can get at the manifold bolts behind

took me about 6 hours to get mine off, my rb26 is inside an s13 bay so it was very tight it's just time consuming

And a lot faster to put back on, next time it'll probably only take a couple hours to get off, it's only a couple bolts that are a real pain.

First time was a pain, 2nd, 3rd and 4th time was easy. It's not bad, just time consuming as previously mentioned. What turbo are you going for? Anything more than 450whp I recommend ripping the engine out since you'll be rebuilding it at the same time (safer to build now than a failure that may take everything out).

check out the FSM, they have instructions, section EN-48

i hope you have OEM manifolds cause aftermarket ones are dam near impossible to get at

aftermarket manifolds have tighter fitment, some of the bolts may not be as accessible, but i think tomei's fitment is the closest to OEM

My last turbo swap with engine still in was -5 turbos and tomei manifolds/outlets. Cakewalk
