  • Power Steering Rack Seals

So I went to change my broken steering rack boot and I found what looks like an end cap seal has come out and power steering fluid was leaking into the boot. My question is what do I do now? Pull the rack and have it rebuilt or buy a new one?

Dang! You got shocks, pegs... Lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?

All racks now are rebuilt. If I remember correctly there is a company in Canada that does the rebuilds. You might be able to send it out, I'd check with a local shop.

A new one will be very expensive.
Best bet is to pull it and have it rebuilt, or we sell a seal kit that you can use to replace the seals.

...and 1.5 hours later the rack is out along with a hurt elbow. Gotta love when bolts finally kick loose. Daryl I will give you a call if the rack and pinion shop I decide to use will need seals. If not I need to order a couple more parts in the next week!

By the way, I ended up removing the steering column linkage at the spline. Any tricks for Lining it up centre when putting it back together?

Lol I DID! Long story short I didn't mark it on the spline which would have been difficult to see anyways. Thinking I will probably just measure my steering rack centre have someone hold the wheel centre and then throw it on. Moving the tie-rods should be able to cover whatever its off by.

Normal procedure is to lock the wheel centered (key out) and then remove the rack. You MUST re center the rack before you install it as well otherwise your steering will be way off.

i hope you hold the steering wheel to the center position before disconnecting the steering column or you gonna have funn counting turns to the right and to the left believe me its no fun when u come to do alignment founding out that its too far right or too far left..

My rack looks pretty much like that as well - but no leaky fluid. I noticed it about a month ago and just pushed that 'Spacer' back in. Any other issues like tire shake at highway speeds or anything like that?

Who is doing your rebuild? I'm in Niagara which is pretty close to Dundas. Please post a review of the rebuild, price, etc...

                      thanks!

I think what happened was a return line on the rack itself was kinked and the pressure build up inside popped my seals. I dropped my rack off at "John Stuart Power Brake" in Stoney Creek today. When I spoke with him over the phone he asked me if it was a skyline and I answered yes. Apparently he had someone drop off a rack to rebuild some time ago and then they never picked it up so he was stuck with it. He was asking $200 for the rebuilt rack but unfortunately it was a GTS rack. I am paying around $300 to rebuild it with a new line to replace the kinked one.

How did the rebuild go? What about delivery time and did they have all the parts, seals, etc... that you needed?

                          thanks!

Rebuild was very impressive. They sent the shafts out to be rechrommed because of too much play, replaced all the seals. Made a new hard line for me because mine was damaged and replaced both boots on either side for around $310. Funny I bought a new boot at napa and it cost me 56 dollars lol. Steering is a lot tighter and much more predictable.
