  • high idle= leaking bovs????

ok I've searched but I cannot find an answer to what is going on. My car has a slightly high idle ~1100rpm. I belived this to be a vacuum leak, and searched my whole engine bay with carb cleaner trying to find it with no success and gave up. Well one day while trying to see how my bovs sound without recirc, i removed the recirc piping and blocked off the one that routes underneath the intercooler. I started the car after this and when I went around to the front I could hear air rushing out of the bovs! I covered the outlets of the bovs with my hand and wouldnt you know the idle dropped down immediately to where it should be. From searching I found that the gtr's bovs are designed to leak, but is this at idle? I'm guessing that its under boost. I am hesitant to change them out because everyone says to stick to factory for best performance, but is this normal? I have a set of blitz bovs to replace them but im not sure what to do.

I also had my idle permanently change to 1100rpm for no reason, AAC screw didn't change anything. Would be interesting to see what the other more experienced users have to say about it.

RB20DET gets a higher than normal idle when there's an intake airleak on throttlebody intake hose joiner (usually loose intake hose clamp).

Sometimes the springs wear out with BOV and sometimes the gasket's under BOV's are not replaced when they are removed, refitted which makes them leak. Another is BOV valve seat can get built up oil deposit's from blowby, or turbo's have failed, leaked oil and cause BOV to not shut properly hence they leak (sometimes have to replace them).

Also stock BOV's aren't that good, as they are known to leak causing drop in hp. On some cars there's a +23hp difference once you stop BOV's leaking. Modifying them to not leak makes them malfunction, as BOV doesn't release at lower boost levels and when it does, turbo surges.

I have tried stock BOV, modified stock BOV, Synapse BOV and Synapse BOV is better with response, hp, etc.

wow i thought someone would have a good answer for me. Is there a way i could increase the spring pressure in the stock units? Maybe a rigged up tension screw in the top?

You can make anything, is it worth it? Probably not. I think your best bet is to source some stock bov's.

Some get a hammer and crush the top of stock BOV to increase preload on spring, but doesn't give spring much room to move into (spring compresses).

This is the stock BOV mod that stops BOV leaking, but like said above it can make BOV not release at lower boost levels, as are blocking the quick release part of stock BOV (part that helps stock BOV to release at lower boost levels) -

The stock BOV mod I used was the Tomei stock BOV mod.

Can blow on valve / valve seat area or use compressed air on that area to see if air is reaching outlet on stock BOV (how you check that the valve seat is leaking).
